Pokemon generally skews "chance" effects in favor of the computer. Back in the dinosaur days of Red and Blue, I had a level 81 Zapdos defeated by a level ~8 Zubat. How, you ask? My Zapdos missed his Drill Peck, and was subsequently confused when the Zubat hit him with Supersonic. Zubat couldn't do more than 1 or 2 damage a hit to Zapdos, but it didn't matter because Zapdos spent every single turn from then on damaging himself from confusion.

You really have to game the higher levels of Battle Tower. I made it to 50 a couple of times, but it's mainly because I kept trying over and over til it just kind of happened. Stupid question, you're EVed right?

Funny how the whole EV thing is almost unmentioned in the game itself and it took internet 'spergery to figure out how the leveling system really worked.

Yep, I ususally go off their natural stats and focus increasing the higher ones, and revolve their attacks around them.
