I have always had a soft spot for those low-detail models, perfect for freehand designs. So, naturally I have decided to ask you people, the Dakkaites, never short of an opinion. These are the best models I can think of so I'm expecting plenty of Other selections. My personal favourite(s) are the Eldar Harlequins. What's yours?

I am going to have to go with the Harlies. THose models are gorgeous, with lots of room for the imagination.

In fact, most of the eldar range is like that, including Vypers, Wraithlords, War walkers and Warlocks.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I went for "standard bearers". I see many wonderful things done with standards, and it's the one of the few realistic places where armies do go all out on colours and patterns. All of the above models can be painted to a fine degree, but I often think it goes away from a well painted realistic figure to a pure exercise in painting ability which looks stunning but is ultimately a bit silly. Harlequins look good, but I parsonally find them a bit too fussy.

If you're going to freehand like crazy, then take a really big vehicle like a Land Raider or Baneblade so you have a larger canvas to work with. Personally, I'd suggest a Valkyrie or Eldar Flyer of some sort.

Otherwise, Standard Bearers are the way to go, even when the flag is crazy big.

Personally, I'm a big fan of tight camouflage patterns on grunts.

Buildings are also a pretty cool place to go nuts. I saw a bastion a few weeks ago that had been painted to have the owner's regimental insignia, numerical signifier, and a freehanded massive Aquila that spanned the rest of the bastion.

I have loved the Harlequins since they first came out back in, what, 1990?

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

No dragons? I've always wanted to have a go at the old wood elf dragon, could never justify the money. Apart from that, a land raider with plenty of freehand and the interior fully done up. One day...

Eldar tanks seem to provide a canvass for some amazing work.

Khorne lord for me - I think it's one of GW's all-time best models at the mo. Plenty of scope to do either a simple looking paint job with loads of blending or loads of flat surfaces to do some free-hand stuff.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

It's tough to choose between a tank and the Harlequins, but in the end I selected the Harlequins because you are able to paint them as ridiculous as you possibly can and it will still look 'proper'. Tanks give you a very nice palette to work with, however. Someone here on Dakka has a freakin amazing Monolith done with an airbrush. Don't remember who or what thread, but I'm sure if you searched, you would find.

The SoB Exorcist.

Lot's of flat surfaces to freehand on, highly detailed armour plates to do some advanced blending on, a couple of infantry sized models for fine detail work. Overall a great model (although a pain to assemble) that is highly challenging to paint, even picking a palette for it is tricky due to all the different areas; makes you want to go crazy but then you remember it has to tie together at the end

Oh, and good weathering opportunities too.
