Hey all, been playing nids for a while and will be atending my first turney in 2 weeks and dont really know what to expect and what to field so a little help would be nice.


well heres the list, first draft anyways.

Not really a friend of 3 WoN squads, or a single lictor.

The lone lictor is like a free KP for the enemy imo.

The broodlord is questionable, but can be effective with infiltrate depending on the terrain.

But I'm not 'nid expert. Just know what i do by playing against you! ;D

Take out the lictor and give the fexes extended carapace. dunno if that would give you enough points to do it but you should try

EC on fexes make only a select few guns now hurt you.

This is from exp playing against a guy who brought 8 MCs to a 1750 tourny. he stomped everyone but me, i was playin guard with earthshakers. i was like, thank god they have no real armor.

Then, I must say that at 1500 you should be able to fit more MCs than that. Zoanthropes are mediocre at best, i have never seen anyone use them and have it be gamechanging. extra synapse, whoopty doo. bring another tyrant if thats what youre worrying about.

ok, cutting the lictor does give enough points for EC on the 2 HS fexes. usually i always take it but read somewhere around dakka that there are really not that many ap3 wpns around so it was kinda 50/50.

TMC X 8 sounds nice but i only have 3 fexes and a tyrant ATM so thats out of the question for now. (side note, 8 tmc is max possible and is doable at 1500p)


zoans are alright for their points, 55 with blast only, put the synapse there becouse of all the won gaunts but thinking of cutting it down to 1 squad of spinegaunts with won only.

started thinking about leaving the broodlord at home an adding another stealer squad to the list and adding some warriors with deathspitters and rending claws.

Actually, it's bonded exoskeleton that will prevent some weapons from affecting the carnifexes. Basically, it raises its toughness to 7, which means that strength 3 weapons and below will not harm it. That means guardsman cc attacks, lasguns, etc will have no effect on the carnifex. Extended Carapace lowers the save from 3+ to 2+, which is also effective, but I think the benefit of increased Toughness stat is slightly better.

Having played with a single lictor, I must concur. He is a model for my shelf, not my gametable for a couple of reasons. 1) he DEEPSTRIKES into area terrain, which means he has to take a dangerous terrain test when he comes into play. Being a 2 wound model, if you have poor dice luck (like I seem to) this can cut his effectiveness in half before he even gets to play. 2) 80 points is a bit steep for his capabilities. He can trash an infantry unit's day, but for 80 points that nets you another squad of hormagaunts (scoring units) or can upgrade your heavy carnifexes further. 3) Being a reserve unit, he suffers from the same pitfalls of all reserves- meaning he may not get there in time to prevent tragedy.

I actually like broodlords. They are the nid equivalent to a special character. They attack fast in cc with their high initiative, have rending for vehicles, decent strength, a high WS, and multiple wounds. Oh yeah, and they strike like a power sword. If only they had an invulnerable save, they'd be awesome. The retinue is handy for that though, being able to transfer some of those wounds is handy. Infiltration is a sweet deal too, by getting you that much closer to the enemy. As a bullet-soak alone he is effecient (because most players kinda panic when you infiltrate that big scary broodlord near their units).

If you are going to add more warriors with deathspitters, I suggest scything talons over rending claws. They have a pretty decent WS (better with adrenal glands) so another attack would benefit a bit more than making their attacks rending.

Ok, FoxPhoenix135 is pretty much spot on. I do contend on some areas though.

For casual play a broodlord is cool. For tournament play not so much. A tyrant plus guard is a much better option. Although I love my flyrant to pieces he just doesn't cut it when it's a competitive match. Go for dakkatyrants no questions asked. This way you have to lose all 10 wounds before it stops shooting.

Also, WoN on all your broods is a waste. Just give it to 1 of them and max out squad sizes for the rest.

So the overall picture I'm building is this

1. Lose the lictor
2. Lose the broodlord + retinue
3. Put in 3 tyrant guard for your tyrant
4. Max out gaunt brood sizes

Of course getting a 2+ Sv for your fexes is nice, as is T7, but with a nasty threat closing (tyrant), they should be ignored for the first few turns anyway...and remember that tyrant w/ guard get a cover save (well it's a point of contention, but that's the way we play it).

as everyone else said lose the lictor it is just a waste of point i personaly dont like the venom canon so id take 2 carnifex's with scything talons barbed strangler and max out defences regen 2+ sav regen
make you guants as big as possible interms of size the more the better
how many gene stealers do you have since if i were you id take as many as possible in the smallest amount of groups and also broodlord retinue doesnt need scuttlers since brood lord him self has infiltrate
keep in mind that brood lord doesnt have fleet of foot like the genesteelers so try and get him as close to somthing as possible so you can get him in combat

Implant attack does have it uses. I agree that it is well worth the points.

Broodlords especially benefit from it, if you use them as a SC/HQ killer like I do.

Right, so not much here to question anymore since everyone has jumped right on it.

Regarding the Carnifii:
The Extended Carapace is a bit price, as is Bonded Exoskeleton. Granted, they are both great. But neither do jack against say, Lascannons. What's always gaurenteed to keep that 'fex around longer is Reinforced Chitin. 5 wound walking murder machine, at your service.

Also, with only a Tyrant and BL, you are looking very frail on the Synapse. Not sure where you would want to dedicate the points for that though. You could take the points saved from Chitin instead of EC to give a Zoanthrope synapse. Also, replacing those Ravenors with a few Warriors wouldn't be bad either.
