In the latest wargames illustrated, there is a promo (attached) which shows what appears to be Vietnam era helicopters and a non-ww2 clip. The folder style is battlefront format/artwork and it all indications seem to imply that we are going to be getting a vietnam game announced next month.

Can anyone who is more up on helicopters and clips than me confirm that it is vietnam? I guess the hope for a napoleonics game from battlefront is fading away, but this is still very cool!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In addition, the paint scheme of those helicopters is completely identical to the paint style that battlefront use on their US WW2 tanks for FoW.

Looking at the solider leaving the helicopter in the part of the manual you can see, I'd say it definitely looks like Vietnam to me.

Sounds good. I'd very much like to have some kind of Asian army in FoW.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

They were trumpeting an Ad for the revised Eastern Front book on the website a couple of days ago but no mention of Vietnam?

It would seem like a strange move given what woud seem like the limited number of forces available? Or this could be a good thing for them as a smaller side line when there is still so much od WW2 that they want to cover?

I can't access their site from work to have a nose, anybody else?

Not having anything on the website is not a surprise - they now announce things about a month in advance in wargames illustrated.

Cozy cockpit of an Archer ARC-5S

Clip is from an AK, but hell yes if they are branching out into Nam.

Pity though that they haven't added any Dutch forces to Flames of War as of yet though.

How about their forums? Evan is usually very active on them and I can't see the WI cover/Ad not being a hot topic there if word has already reached Dakka?

(sorry to keep suggesting you take a look elsewhere M'lord but following that recent thread with the massive Vietnam delta table featured I really am excited about this) - [bows and scrapes fawningly]

Wow that would rock big time... I imagine cool camos on american troops, much wilder than the brits paratroopers I collect.
I'm very curious to see how this turns out.

Doubt Mr. Taylor could shed any light legally.

Would be pretty great if they did branch out to Vietnam.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Those are UH-1D utility helicopters, equipped as gunships. Classic Vietnam war, mid to late 60s.

US troops of the time generally wore plain olive drab uniforms. ARVN troops often had Tiger Stripe camo, which was also adopted by some US Special Forces and rufty-tufty types.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

There are a few snippets on the FoW forums:

As far as I know the rules will be a WI product - although as obviously owned by BF this effectively the same. The figure range to accompany the rules will also obstensively be from WI. They will, as stated by others, be based on Partizans & Politzi but what size of games they will cater for I don't know.

Seems that some stuff was shown at the NZGT:
figure small scale battle with a few scenarios. from what we were shown, i'm guessing the P&P skirmish rules might be used.

And from wayne@bf:
It is not based on Partizans & Politzi.

You do know that this is Battlefront who produce "Flames of War" we are talking about, not Mongoose who produce "Battlefront: Evolution - World at War" don't you?

La Drang Valley cements it.

This was a major conflict in the Vietnam War.
It was basically a Take and Hold scenario for the US Air Cavalry.
Since the 7th took part in the battle I would say those would be the helicopters in the image, but the markings don't match so I guess the FOW boys are being original again!

Great news.

This will be cool if it pans out. Much better than making those complicated USMC and Japanese forces that Pacific Theater of Operations would require. Plus they get to potentially write a new main rulebook and their scenario book deals.

I actually do think this is cool, though.

I think Iraq is too soon, most likely, unless they do a Iraq v Iran thing.

I could see a late '80s Cold War-type "what if" game, maybe.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Maybe scenarios from the 6-day war with Israel?

I've always been interested in FoW, just have yet to get into it. Something set in Vietnam might be interesting, and thoughts of making a 7th Cavalry army popped into my head as soon as I saw those Hueys. I'm interested in how they'd do the rules as straight up fights between the US and NVA were comparatively rare. Faction wise it'd pretty much be US/ARNV vs. NVA/VC. Not being all that familiar with FoW, are there armies within the nations and are they drastically different? Like paratroopers and mechanized?

Flames is basically takes a 40k-style approach to modern wargaming: d6s, faction books, minis, etc. Probably the most successful historical / modern wargaming system out there, because it is accessible - you buy your book and off you go!
