I knew wolves and bears view us as a potential snack, but coyotes? I thought they were the size of a border collie?

About to eat your Avatar...

Attacks by coyotes on humans are rare; they usually prey on deer and hares.

You are more likely to get attacked by something like a mountain lion really. Coyotes are really quite small, and a swift boot to the rib-cage, or the nose, is bound to basically kill it in the long run. Remember, most animals are actually quite smart, especially predators, and they usually won't mess with you without serious reason; hunger being the case here.

Runnin up on ya.

I had a coyote as a pet when I was a kid....poor thing was killed by a car a number of years later but she was quite loving and intelligent if not the ugliest "dog" you've ever seen.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Wow thats terrible. Like Wrexasaur said, you'd think you'd just kick it in and it would run.

I've been attacked by a massive Rabid Golden Retriever (I know funny right?), It was going crazy...bite my back underneath my shoulder blade. This was when i was like 14...I didn't wanna hit it, so i just ran.

For the record if that happened now i wouldn't think twice to give it a punch and a kick, I'd even skin it for its pelt to wear as a trophy.

Could have been an old person. There was an old couple killed by a pack of stray dogs in the news awhile back.

More importantly, the world lost a young bit of [insert slang for female genitalia here] in its prime, which only worsens the supply crunch.

From wikipedia

Northern coyotes are typically larger than southern subspecies, with the largest coyotes on record weighing 74¾ pounds (33.7 kg) and measuring over five feet in total length.

Not exactly a small dog by any stretch. So between the two animals, even assuming they were not quite that large, there are pretty good odds she was outweighed.

I will add, in the deserts of California and deserts in Nevada, packs of coyotes can get quite large (20+) and that can be intimidating. I know what the "facts" say but I can vouch for this first hand as two of us (this was LRRP Ops in US Army) were harassed once by a large group. We observed several large packs through the years I worked in those areas but were only harassed that once. I think if we were even slightly vulnerable, they may have attacked. They certainly were testing. Maybe it was a lean year for food? I don't know.

Actually, Wolves are extremely wary of humans and are more likely to slink away without you knowing it's there than attack a human. Wolves are extremely timid creatures towards humans, even being willing to abandon a kill if humans are near.

If a wolf isn't rabid, the main causes of them attacking humans is being provoked by said human, habituation(human settlement intruding on their territory), and defending young. In most cases, it's a lone wolf and not a pack.

Also a large number of "wolf" attacks are actually caused by hybridized Wolf-Dogs as the domestic dog genes eliminate the wolf genetic timidity towards humans.

I've seen exactly one coyote in my life (well, besides on T.V. strapping itself to various ACME products),the one I saw was being chased by a 7 or 8 year old kid with a stick...didn't seem much like a man eater, the coyote that is,the kid looked pretty dangerous.

There are a whole host of sub species. The common species in Canada are just a little smaller then a German Sheppard. Most wild dogs by them selves will retreat from humans. The animals in question though had become relatively familiar with people and attacked a smaller lone female.

I've carried a couple after they were shot.

Respectfully, that ain't . You never met an American Bull Terrier in his prime. Nothing says loving like a bear hunter bolling over the rottweiler thats coming for its master.
Irrespective, I'd drop kick a 50-75 dog through the field goal of life without difficulty. Hell I have.
Plus there were bystanders. I don't get it. I just don't get it.

Exactly. thats occurred several times in S. Cali, and ran into such myself. I can understand 10-20 of them. Thats why I keep doubting the reporter got it right (they rarely do), saying there were only two.

Well its not normal, from what i learned growing up, the only animal that will 'hunt' a human for food in canada is the polar bear, all other attacks have been because of othere factors, such as a bear and its cub, wolves on the edge of starvation, a sandwitch in a backpack. Normally its a bear attack once a year and usually a hiker that had food on him or her. but if you think about it most animals have at one time attacked humans, from bunnies that get corneres, moose that were agressive during mating season, geese that run off a potential threat, even bats take a swing once in a while. i hope the Game wardens check the Cyote for rabies, or something else, cause attacks especially where she was killed isnt normal (use to live a couple of hours from there)

Somewhere in south-central England.

I was going to make some quip about cougars being a known danger to young men, but it seems frivolous.

Instead, here's a story about elephants.

My multimedia student this year is from Sri Lanka, where they have elephants. The elephants are meant to be protected because they can either be tamed for agricultural use or make good tourist attractions. He showed me some pictures of a herd of elephants going through his town to get to the local river for a bath.

Anyway, a few years ago, a guy in the next town up caught a young elephant which was going down the street and sawed off its tusks. This was observed by an older male elephant, who did not intervene at the time. You can guess what's coming next.

The male came back some months later, caught the elephant kidnapper and stomped him to death.

Of course the poor old male was then shot.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

If she freaked out, the Coyotes would've sensed it and gone in for the kill. The online Canadian news reported it was two Coyotes. Seeing as she was by herself, perhaps there were more?

Coyotes can be timid or vicious little jerks. If they were hungry enough, they'd attack for sure. A kick is enough, but a handful of stones thrown in their general direction with some aggressive shouting works too. They're all over Southern Alberta and there are 100s, if not 1000s in the city of Calgary alone.

Lots of coyotes in the West and Texas. Cute buggers. I'd one to my menagerie of terror if I could. First I need to get a menagerie of terror though. I just have a menagerie of mild annoyance at this point.

I always wanted a hyena.

Any animal that laughs whilst it's chewing up elephant thigh bones with a 1200lb ppi jaw strength is cool.

And walking past the hoodie chavs with their staffie pit bulls would be hilarious.
