What? What!? WHAT!?

RIVETS MAKE THINGS MOAR GRIMDARK!

*Ahem*... I find your lack of trust in cutting-edge Imperial rivet technology to be near-heretical. May you hope E.F. never reads this. He tends to purge first, ask later.

Drybrushing rivets is far more productive.
I think the Emprah must prefer them as it allows his mech to be painted up faster.

The arcane powers of the Wold-Yng were lost during the Dark Age of Technology. The Adeptus Machanicus searches to this day for any sign of the magicks that can turn two pieces of metal into one.

Fortunately the Mythological Reference pattern rivets currently used in the creation of the Holy Warmachines in Service to the God Emperor of Man are a thousand times as effective at holding pieces of metal together as any modern rivets, due to being made of pure Reslientium.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". simply it takes secounds to grind of a rivet wheres as if you were to grind out a complete weld it would take ages so therwe fore it is to make battle field repair easier

also rivets allow more movement in the panels then weld which is useful when entering planets whos atmosphere differ to the one on which the war machine was built

Welders dont come in guns, so they use rivet guns instead.

Im sure that some of the rookies tried welding with a plamsa gun and cooked themselves and the tank with it.

Welds are smooth and unassuming.

Grimdark is never smooth or unassuming.

Nor are rivets.

Therefore, rivets are grimdark. Get it?

Because they can fly around in the tank and actually kill the people inside?
Most of their tanks seem to be based off WW2-Vietnam era tanks, that and yes it's just for looks. Don't try to think about it too much, it's asthetic like a lot of the Imperial equipment.

You folk ever consider the possibility that some of the rivets are decorative. Or do all the skulls that appear on imperial equipment and buildings have a construction purpose hmmm, "we've run out of rivets guys" "no sweat, just use some skulls instead" don't think so.
Maybe too that so few understand how to work with ceremite, plascrete etc that they just rivet existing bits together because they can't fuse/weld them because in the grim dark future there is only cheap labour.

... Are you bringing logic into this?

Seriously though, yeah ... quite possibly decorative. I sure don't need all the rivets on my leather jacket, but I put 'em there all the same.

Just think, a thousand years time someone will dig up the remains of your jacket and think that it was some form of armour for urban warfare.

In the 40k universe the rivets are used during construction to temporarily hold things together until the bonding agent takes full effect. Generally they don't bother removing them/grinding them off afterwards but they could if they wanted to. It's probably pretty likely they just leave them be to both save time and also somewhat for aesthetic reasons.

ROFL!!!

... it probably COULD be used as light armor. No way would it ever stop bullets, but if I zip it up it definitely can stop a blade depending on where it strikes.

Hmm thats a fair point.....the imperium is waging a thousand campaigns accross a thousand galaxies accross a thousand worlds naturally with a high mortality and destruction rate....so youd think theyd want to simplify construction methods in order to mass produce enough vehicles to replace combat losses and re-equip armoured formations.....let alone raise new armoured regiments. Becuase welding is quicker than rivetting, just look at the us shipyards producing the liberty class in world war two, by using welding rather than riveting....the us was able to produce 3 ships per day......although welding requires more skill....you dont require as many personel as you would if you were using rivets therefore freeing up more labour.....but then again maybe skilled labour is far and few between in the imperial production line.....or it is applied to only the finest warmachines....or it just makes it wh40k

Sorry if ive been a bore

Or they just have servitors, rather than human labour. Far less chance for error when your brain has been lobotomized and reprogrammed to perform one specific task, and only one specific task.

The real question is whether or not the vehicles of the Imperium are composed of weldable material. I would guess that they aren't.

From what I've read, most of the construction and fabrication materials are some form of theoretical ceramic composite alloys. The combination gives them strength and heat resistance while maintaining some flexibility and avoiding brittleness.

That would probably make welding a much more difficult procedure, so I lean towards the industrial adhesive or bonding agent theory with rivet backup.
