Where exactly are you? Philadelphia's actually pretty large as cities go---there's quite a difference being in Northeast Philly versus South Philly versus Chestnut Hill...

I'm assuming you (the OP) are new to the area or 40k, so a couple good options to follow up on:

- Philadelphia Area Gaming Enthusiasts is a smallish weekly gaming club in Center City that features 40k every 4th Sunday. You can check it out here: http://pagegaming.com/. As a core member I am biased, but I think the 40k is very friendly and mature, with several solid players and a good mix of armies. Eldar, Marines, Wolves, Dark Angels, Demons, Chaos Marines, Tau, IG, Tyranids, Orks, and Necron are all represented, though Chaos Marines are currently more or less ascendant...

- Redcap's Games in West Philly has a fair number of tables & good terrain. I believe they have a small 40k crowd that plays frequently on Saturdays. They also occassionally run events. Although 40k is not super prominent on their calendar, it's definitely prominent in their stock (along with WHFB) and they're all about it, so if you're in University City/West Philly, definitely swing by and chat them up. Info at http://www.redcapscorner.com/.

- I've never been, but there is apparently a lot of 40k at Showcase Comics in Media, a little outside the city. A number of regulars there as well as the owner are also present on these boards and will hopefully comment, but the reputation is very solid.

- There's a GW store in Franklin Mills Mall, although it's closing in January (allegedly with another one to open in the area). Another, slightly better stocked, GW store is in Voorhees, NJ (a few minutes from the bridges). Most of the staff there seem more chill than at the Franklin Mills store, though I have not played at either.

If you're around, come check out The MechaniCon (www.themechanicon.com) in West Chester this weekend.

There are still some openings for the tournament. Or you can come and just do some open gaming. Either way, it might be a good opportunity to meet some local players.

Hope to see you there!

Hey guys,

I live over in South Philadelphia, and my friends and I recently lost our place to play :( I have been up to Showcase several times to trade some stuff with Mike, he is a really nice guy and he has a TON of terrain, great gaming tables, and well run events. It is a little far to go for a pickup game of 40K for me but I am planning on going for the scheduled Apoc games in the near future. Just a heads up! For the scheduled events/games you need to have everything painted to a decent tabletop standard though

Anyway that is some good info about the Philadelphia Area Gaming Enthusiasts gonna have to check that out thanks!

If anybody's interested in 40k @ PAGE, the next 40k session will be Nov 22 (4th Sunday of the month). That's the weekend *before* Thanksgiving. Basic rundown of PAGE is:

We meet every Sunday evening in the Ethical Society Building on Rittenhouse Square in Center City (basically 19th and Locust). There's boardgaming every week at PAGE and any game is always welcome, but some weeks feature particular genres or games. First and second week are role playing, third week is for new boardgamers, fourth week is for 40k & miniatures (WarMachine is starting to get a group together in the club). First two visits are free, and basically $4 or $5 a visit afterward (goes to rent; there's a couple payment options). Notably, we tend to encourage a slightly older (not teenage), more mature, relaxed crowd of players.

Like I said earlier, our armies are all over the place, though there's currently a strong block of Chaos Marine players. We don't seem super susceptible to army-of-the-month issues---the only Space Wolves player has been dying for a new codex for years, so I think he's earned it. At the moment we have about 14 regular 40k players, so 8--12 on any given 40k night. Our play area has a ton of space, and people are encouraged to bring terrain they want to use though we can field a good number of tables already. Most players are making decent effort to paint their minis, but it's definitely not required. For the most part we're very open to people getting into the hobby, (I'm a relatively new player myself, without tons of painted stuff), building new armies, or experimenting with proxies.

Most months we just agree on a point value and match up randomly. We also have a friendly stats & tournament ladder scheme going on, so people also challenge specific players from time to time. The occassional special event also crops up. This year some of those for 40k included a group trip to a tournament in Delaware, helping out with and having a bunch of guys compete in the first round of 'Ard Boyz at Redcap's Corner, a one-night narrative micro-campaign, a one-night escalation campaign tournament, and an Apocalypse game. The latter was just last weekend; we rented our space for a whole day and held an eleven player, 10500pt/side, 15'x6', attack/defend, Chaos vs Imperial, nine hour showdown. We're hoping to start having a big game like that every few months or so as space availability permits.

In any event, if anyone's interested in coming at any point, drop me a line at tjkopena@gmail.com or hop onto the club mailing list so we can make sure we'll have enough tables setup for everyone, agree on points, etc.

Thanks!
