Trying toget my head around if i need a big bloated lord, that is hard hitter, or something lesser?

are big lords good? or just more men?

It really depends on the list and what you need it to do.

I have found that the easiest place to steal points from is the Lord/Hero's wargear. That being said you don't want you lord to be a pushover; I would make a lord for each god and see what fits your style.

With WoC there is no such thing as cheap.

Some races need a lord and some dont

With WoC your lords tend to be really expensive. An exulted will do most of the job for 1/4 of the points. Try and be sparse with gear. Even with no magical items exalted heroes aren't pushovers and will generally kill their points worth.

Lords are good. Most of the time against competitive armies (particularly Vampires, and most Dark Elf and Daemons builds) you'll find yourself wanting a Sorcerer Lord for the better magic defense.
