A bit of history: It has been a good 8 years since my mother has gotten me anything that I actually want for Christmas. I figure if she's going to be spending money, it might as well be something I want. I'm going to attempt to ask my mother for a figure case for Christmas. My criteria are as follows:

-Needs to be purchased all at once, from one place (online). I'll worry about custom trays and crap later, she needs the simplicity of following a link and paying for it.

-Needs to not be friggin' huge. I don't want to carry a GW army in it, just my Warmachine, Anima Tactics and other skirmish figs. 3-4 trays is more than plenty.

-Needs to have good modular support. I will want trays later that I know I can find, so preferably one with lots of existing support. I'll be getting at least one battlefoam tray.

So, sell me on one.

Worship me.

I can't speak to the simplicity of it, but Sabol has some great cases.

I personally use the GW army transport (the big case) and I plan to get another one plus the heavy support backpack to carry them both. They each hold 6 trays, they come with 3 infantry trays and a custom pop-out big tray for vehicles and whatnot. I've got mine hollowed out, and I use the foam bits to pad everything inside. I really like mine because it's a hard case, and cool-looking, but my buddy just got the big Sabol rolling case, and it's definitely more space-efficient, and cheaper too.

I'd like to second sabol cases. They come in multiple sizes, trays are easy to find, and can be moved from case to case as your collection grows. Plus they aren't too hard on the wallet.

Battlefoam, have not found a bag that matches the quality of the bag and trays itself nor the foam itself.

Love mine.

Sabol sabol sabol sabol. I bought their battalion and a bunch of foam trays, it's a very nice case that holds a lot. The total mine came to was around $160, however this is a very large case - it holds three of my armies.

Be warned however, depending on how you store your miniatures you will have a lot of excess foam from gap creating. If you buy some of the 1/4 "bases" and use the excess foam to build free trays, you can save yourself a bit of money. PVA glue is fine as an adhesive but I use "Styroglue" because PVA tends to pool at the bottom; Styroglue ignores gravity for the most part

I didn't realize this and bought a full set of trays, so I guess my larger vehicles that could never fit in the case reasonably (my two monoliths) will be getting their own unique self-made transport.

Love mine.

QFT. My Battlefoam bag outclasses my two Sabol bags hands down. Better material, better internal support, more pouches, and more room than they advertise(mine's currently carrying 7" of foam as opposed to the 6" they state it fits and supply it with with no problems).

As for the foam, Sabol trays tend to have sticky bottoms along the edges after removing the foam, requiring me to cut custom paper inserts to protect my models from sticking to the glue. I've yet to have this same problem with Battlefoam trays.

Battlefoam. I just got my 1520 and it is a great product. Just remember to CALL IN. Email is not a good way to communicate with Romeo and his team. Order via phone and discuss the content of your bag over the phone.

I picked up the "original" ArmyTransport from Sabol.

It's the bee's knees, and comes with all the foam inside it already.

It's also available with a discount from The War Store.

Columbus, Oh

since you want something smallish.. Sabol makes a Platoon sized bag that holds the regular Sabol trays.. that might work for you.

Of course, if you are getting this as a gift and all.. get BF's 1520 case.. (Yes, Mom.. it is CRUCIAL... )

Or a 216 or 432.. whatever size is actually important...

For the size of forces you're talking I can't support the Sabol Platoon enough. I recieved mine last christmas and use it to haul around my vehicles for 40k. The nice part about it is it isn't very large but can still fit a lot of models, the way I have mine configured it holds 6 IG vehicles (either chimeras or russes, doesn't matter which) and a 1" tray on top for either infantry to turrets. I've seen the trays from battlefoam in person and I am impressed, but as you said yourself you just want something your mom can order and will worry about the foam later. The Sabol Platoon is combact, easy to carry, holds all of the models you will need, and easily available pre-packaged with foam from a huge number of online retailers. Now you just have to hope your mom listens to you and doesn't buy you another sweater!

The Sabol Army Transport. Go for the Motor Pool or the Division size if you can. You will never need another army case again.

That is, unless your collection grows beyond its significant carrying capacity. In which case, just get another one.

Cheers
