I still rock Warcraft 2. I even have an install of the original Warcraft that runs on DOS.
Calling Warcraft 3 an "oldie but goodie" make me feel old, and I'm only 29. And it hurts my feelings. So send me money to make me feel better.
Cheers

Warcraft II might be old school, but WC 3 just has some age to it. Of course to me old school is Combat on the Atari 2600.

true but you see w3 was made in 2003 iirc so nowadays that means it's oldschool(every video game older than 3 years is considered oldschool, y'know)...still a classic game!

When Warcraft 3 came out I played it through but I have found it boring on a replay. Tower Defence was fun.
Honestly Warcraft 3 was great but it could have used some kind of sequel. Otherwise it is a good yet could be almost called mediocre game. Nothing special really, no Warcraft 1/2, Starcraft or Diablo. It was 3D and the heroes thing was cool.
Looking forward to Warcraft IV.

Every time I try and play I ragequit as soon as remember that takes a fething hour for an orc berserker (who's really a misjudged Native American) a fething hour to kill a goddamn purple Mary-Sue elf archer.
The campaign editor is great though, I've had a lot of fun with it the past. I just wish it had more units besides a Monster Manual's worth of D&D monsters. I mean, they don't even have a human with a bow.

God fething dammit garret, I've facepalmed at a lot of things you've said, but this... this just makes me want to scream at my computer.
That said, I think Warcraft III's main issues were that non-hero units had far too much health and the fluff changed too much. Orcs becoming misunderstood Native Americans and making an alliance with humans? These are the guys who smashed their way through Azeroth (the continent, not the world) and butchered defenceless villagers!
And the Jamaican trolls... oh God, that was just stupid. The forest/ice/dark troll voices were fine, but the new trolls just sound ridiculous.
And what's with the fething Mary Sue treehugging WHFB Wood Elves Night Elves?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

WC3 did not change the fluff in those regards,
in WC2, beyond the dark portal it was explained that demons possessed the orcs and destoryed their world, which is why they were attacking azeroth. It even went so far as to say they were shamanistic noble people.
and Orcs didnt make an alliance with humans, they were enslaved at the begninng of WC3, then they escaped and fled to Kalimdor. Even when they got there they had to deal with human attackers. Yes, its true a larger threat tied them together for a major battle, but this happens in the real world too, look at the USSR and the USA in WW2 and just after.
the sound files for troll axethrowers already had the accent in WC2, long before WC3
they gave the non hero units more health so the combat would be slowed down enough for your hero units to actually make a difference, If you cut everythings health in half for instance, the combat moves so fast there is no point at all to casting spells.

Well then, I want in on the action too! PONG is waaaaaaaaay better than Warcraft 3 could ever hope to be. The subtle complexities of the way that the ball moves about the screen remindes me of an epic poem, like The Illiad. The gameplay provides a deep and philosophical look at the human nature. Not necessarily true. I've played with halved life (and halved resource/supply usage), and I used spells about as much as I did before. Offensive spells actually do a decent amount of damage, so I feel like it's finally not a waste of time to use them instead of macroing better. Summoning spells are as good as ever, as a scouting ones, and auras, and passive combat abilities. Buffs and healing spells are the only ones I can think of that really suffer.
Now, when you start to have a large amount of wizards in the battle then I could see it starting to become difficult to use them all at once, but giving more spells the option to be autocast and making the spells both take more mana and have a greater effect would alleviate a lot of that.
The rate at which things die by default gets really annoying. It breaks all suspension of disbelief when your berserker can kill a fortified tower in the time it takes to kill three unarmored archers. It's like every troop is a fething zealot.

I actually thought the heroes were the funnest part of the actual game, game-play wise. Mostly because of their final skill they get. Teleport, Avatar, even Trueshot is kind of cool. Resurrect, whoever did that.
I think the game is kind of stupid, personally, because of rushes but I never really played it enough, I always (and still do) stuck with Starcraft except between friends.

I thought they were fun in the campaign.
In regular games they're just kind of... boring/annoying. It's like the game wants you to play it like it's a campaign mission when it's really not. Following Joe Paladin around while he fights fish-men is like some sort of weird side-quest when you're trying to build up an army and fight against another army.
I don't really like how the "experience points" thing works either; they go from weak to uber after killing just a few handfuls of trolls (but never get that good from fighting against actual soldiers... even though that's the only reason you have him around), and it seems like an incomplete RPG thing going on in an incomplete RTS. Jack of all trades, master of none, in this case.
I would rather have had them somewhere between how they were done in Warcraft 3 and the heroes in Age of Mythology.
