And her Dad is a total and utter knob for coming to see me in my old job (I sold Spectacles) and expecting a hefty discount on a pair of Rimless Varifocals (£450+ at a minimum) because his daughter did her job.

Now don't get me wrong, I could never be a soldier, on account I am cut from totally the wrong cloth, and had the girly in question asked for a discount, I'd have considered it.

But her Dad can knob right off. I don't penalise the parents of junkie scum, so why should I reward the parents of a soldier?

Not in so many words. But yes.

In fact I suggested if he wanted low quality toot for a bargain price, he might like to try Specsavers, who rather than supply the more expensive, but infinitely more suitable polycarbonate varifocal lenses, would supply acrylic lense which are inherently weaked by the drilling process involved in rimless specs, and would be pretty much guaranteed to be buggered beyond use in a few days.

Like I said, he's a knob.

Whereas I wouldn't say no to knobbing his daughter. I reckon she could sling me round the room a few times. After all.......

Please remember that 99% of serving soldiers do not see themselves as hero's, they are just doing their job. It is the media who are using the term hero and believe me it gets annoys the soldiers a hell of a lot more than it annoys civvies.

@ Maddoc, many people in all walks of life recieve recognition they do not deserve, from the crappy gold stars at McDonalds through to long service certificates for people who push brooms around warehouse's for 20 odd years.

Soldiers medals are not always given out for special achievments or bravery, most of the time they are given out in regocnition for service in a particular operation or conflict.

As someone who has worked in a McDonalds, they do deserve it. 99% of people working in a McDonalds are Smart, Well Mannered people who happen to have the misfortune of being born in the Wrong country. At the one where I worked (quite happily for 4 years till a new head manager came along and fethed things up royally) we had Engineers, Lawyers, Teachers and lots of other guys working there simply because they could not get a job in their respective field because of their nationality.

Considering these people deal with the scum that is 99% of the public, in a really gakky job for little pay, they need all the help they can get to not go postal on a weekly basis.

I always like the Fast Food guys.

(Of course, I'm a former Fast Food guy myself.)

Sorry mate, I wasn't trying to say that the guys at Maccy D's don't deserve them, I was just using it as an example of the type of rewards that are given out for effectively doing not much more than you are required to do in your contract, I worked for a large pub chain for a while and recieved a "bronze star" for keeping my finger nails clean ffs!

Yet another award I'll never win...

I'm not George Bush though, so I got a shot at a Nobel peace prize.

I really don't see why I should feel guilty that an engineer or doctor is serving me a Big Mac. So you come from a country that is in rag order and your solution is to compound the problem by contributing to a 'brain drain'?
