Yeah! The Russian people overthrew the chains of communism so that they could let their country be run by the Russian mafia instead. Awesome! To celebrate this momentous occasion, I'm gonna order me up some weaponized plutonium from the 'Stans.

I was there! Well, not in Berlin but Mannheim, actually. At least it was Germany. There was a LOT of uncertainty from the older West German citizenry. They were really concerned about their relatively strong economy tanking due to a massive welfare influx. The youth LOVED it. 20 years ago, wow I'm getting old.

So, I'm gathering there was some kind of wall? And it had something to do with German people?

Was it an attempt at the world record for largest wall dance?

It's kind of crazy it's only been twenty years, and that when I was born, Germany was still divided. Interesting times.

There's actually a conference on the Berlin wall going on right now at my university. I might go to one of the lectures this evening.

When I was at school everything east of Berlin was coloured red on the map. This has totally screwed my geography ever since.

In the mid-late 90's we were still using Geography books with the collective USSR in it.

Great moment in history.

Damn shame that North Koreans are still living under a Cold War divide.

That's what happens when you have a megalomaniac xenophobic dictatorial warmonger who refuses to compromise or consider coming to peace talks ruling half a country.

I think I might have single-handedly just gotten Dakka banned in North Korea...

I went to school during the cold war, and I was mainly concerned with the city-destroying missiles that were aimed at me. I had a hard time believing that the whole fall of communism was actually happening for a long time. And yes, BrookM, that was hilarious. I'm dizzy after the gales of laughter. Next?

No, the mistake you made was in thinking the Berlin Wall was the end of the Soviet Union. While the fall of the Berlin Wall was an important part of the timeline for the Soviet Empire as a whole, it was neither the beginning (glasnost started in '85) nor was it the end (elections occurred in 1991 and the Soviet Union was officially dissolved in December of that year).

The wall was a pretty big deal for the Germans, though. And also David Hasselhoff.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Germans are interesting only compared to the Belgians and the Dutch.

20 years ago I was playing RT with my mates, on our humongous sand-table in a backyard, over beers.

Three days ago I was playing 5th edition in the club creche.

Can I have the "good old days" back (but without the inflation rate we had then) please?

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Forever alone

Damned hooligans, breaking down walls! Who do they think they are?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
