Some might remember from around 2005 Dream Forge was going to put out a line of Large Gothic Robots Who Wear Cathedrals for Hats and had even run their designs by GW to make sure they were fine. Despite the apparent nod from GW they got a cease and desist letter once they started selling them and that was the end of that...

Well there are signs of life there now with some more original looking designs. Nothing's up for sale yet but it looks hopeful.

If you never got to see them I put some old images in the gallery.

Making Stuff

Under the couch

Yeah, someone linked to them a while back, in one of the 'making models for GW games' discussions... noticed the website update then.

Here's hoping they can make a go of it. There's some nice design work hidden through there.

funny stuff - pot & kettle from people who got hit with the IP hammer from GW!

from their IP section

"One off creations: If you make a model that is not substantively different and/or is blatantly a copy of our IP, we reserve the right to protect our IP. If you make a model that is so close to DFG IP that someone would likely mistake it for DFG IP you have likely violated copyright or trade dress laws and we reserve the right to protect our IP."

and this bit made me laugh:

"Model Conversion Kits: We do not allow unlicensed third parties to manufacture or produce conversion kits for our models. We need to be able to control our product quality and all derivatives in order to produce products for years to come. We are constantly taking requests for new kits or conversion kits and would be happy to receive your input."

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

Well, they're bound to be bitter as all hell. I know I would be.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

Those dreamforge titans are pretty sweet. How much did they cost when they were released?

I think the problem lay in blatantly copying GW's original Warlord Titan's head design...

Those things look great. How big are they compared to Forgeworld titans?

Not many links on there site work; i take it this is due to the C&D letter?

Of course, as an American, that means I must say that soccer sucks, and football (real football... you know, the one where you do everything with your hands) is 10,000 times as good. I mean, football players could probably beat up soccer players, even, because they actually know sports.

The story of DreamForge (and it's owner Mark, known on Dakka as Nosegoblin) should still be found in the archive here at Dakka. For those who don't want the bother with a search, I will give a summation.

Around 2001 Mark, a long time fan of GW and in particular the Epic Titans, sculpted and sold to other fans a model called the Gabriel; it was based on the Epic Knight Titan and Mark quickly received a C&D. He complied and walked away a more experienced businessman. In 2004 Mark approached GW with the design for the Crusader and the Blockhead Leviathan; he received confirmation from them that they did not, at that time, feel it infringed their IP. His mistake, in hindsight, was that he did not ensure that he received anything legally binding from them before proceeding.

Mark invested a lot of money to begin production of the Leviathans and began to accept orders; the price for the Crusader was to be $550 which was quite reasonable considering the pounds of resin and dozens of molds needed.

He received the C&D from GW just after he'd sold the first Leviathan. He was faced with the realization that, even should he want to pursue legal action with GW over this, it would take quite some time to work through the legal system (probably years), would require large amounts of money (money that he'd just tied up in supplies to start his business), and had no guarantee that he would win.

I'm not surprised that Mark has absented himself from the GW scene since that time, frankly I'm surprised to see him back at all. I look forward to seeing what he markets; I thought he was an excellent scuptor and artist and enjoyed his work.
