I felt that they probably would have been overrun in the end(we called it game at about 11:30) but would have taken out several more empire units

I am unsure about the sizing of the unit, should I try 20 warriors a regiment?

The unit of 18 is pretty much the default I've seen when they have spears. I would say 2 units if you have a slaan and temple guard, 3-4 units if you don't (for 2k). At 1k and 1500 i would say 2 units is enough.

I do like the idea of 18, in 3 ranks of 6, and would personally use at least 3 units of them.

7 across might work, but then it would may waste a few models since the smaller bases with only 5 wide would avoid 1 column on the flank.

Do you plan to place, Champions, Musicians, or Banners in the units? In 1000 points I would avoid the banner but put the other two in.

I've only ever seen them run at 11 (if a scarvet or oldblood will be joining) or 12, when armed with spears. 6 wide.

When armed with HW shield (what I have modeled) I run them 5 wide in unit of 10, or 15 then add a character. Noone else uses HW/shield. :(

Saurus are not shock troops, they will be hitting almost everything on a 4+. They are tarpits but can do enough attacks, coupled with cold blooded and a BSB nearby to stick around for ages, to allow your other units to counter charge.

People rarely shoot at saurus as they advance, they are too busy shooting/magicing terradons, stegs, sallies, kroxigor etc.

I'd run them in 15's or maybe 12's, just to be safe. 20 is a bit too big, and that's mainly because the Lizardmen army has too many targets for people to worry about the Saurus, as Gonads said.

Saurus can be pretty effective against most infantry, what with T4 S4 and A2. Their pitiful WS 3 however, is uninspiring. They can reliably beat most T3 core troops, and have a pretty solid chance against most T4 (Barring those damn Chaos Warriors, and Bloodletters, maybe)

Bloodletters dont cut it verse Saurus. The two attacks for Saurus REALLY work for 'em and you need a weapon skill only possessed by elites or characters to make the Saurus's hitting on only 5+

I'd think Bloodletters have WS 5.

Same with Chaos Warriors.

Plus, at I1, you're pretty much striking last UNLESS you get the charge.

Sarus warriors are really good with spears. With shields I find them to be meh.

So, if your going to field spears you want two full ranks of guys and some guys to take casualties. Generally it is worth paying for the entire third rank. A fourth rank is expensive and not usually worth it as it provides little. 6 wide with three ranks is the standard and it works well.

In this configuration they will stand up to most knight charges and will fend off dam near any opposing infantry.

As for how many units to take...3 is the max, 2 is decent, 1 is fine. Really one or two depending on the makup of the rest of your army.

Point for point letters lose to sarrus warriors taking or receiving the charge. Point for point letters with a hearld will kill sarrus warriors with a scar vet on the charge (and they should easily get the charge with the magical banner) but will still lose if charged.
