If you were to build a lizardmen army WITHOUT steggadons/engine of the Gods, how would you do it?

Slaan, extra dice, miscast mitigation, all spells, dispel scrolls, bane head
3 saurus scar vets, all with magic weapons, one with jag charm.
26 temple guard full command
4 units skinks
2 units terradons
2 units 3 salamanders
Rest as you want (probably min units saurus) to 2250 points.

BANG! will hammer most opponents.

I'd go for something like this:

Alot of folks seem to have luck with the Skrox units - great for flanking guys who bounce off the saurus spear blocks.
Haven't had much success with salamander units - always seem to misfire.
Its hard but not impossible to go without Stegs - GW made them so good and such great models, most competitive armies have them.

I love the steg models, and I know the Engine works great, but mine ALWAYS seem to die before they can really do anything. It's just my bad luck. I just wanted a more diverse army so my opponents would start to fear other parts of the army instead of just the Slann and Steg, then I could come back with the steg in a few months and maybe that would shift focus away from them.

I hear you on the stegs dying - with Warhammer going towards "monster fest", it's becoming more and more prevalent to take artillery and war machines to deal with the big stuff. Lets see:

Empire - Steam Tank
Dark Elves - Dragons, Hydras
VC - Vargulfs, Dragons
Lizardmen - Stegs
Skaven - Abominations
High Elves - Dragons
Demons - Greater Demons

The list goes on - just makes cannons, boltthrowers and stone throwers just that much more attractive.
