I see a lot of posts with the above subject or "Friendly/Competitive" in the title in the army lists forum.

What does this exactly mean to you?

Do people want half the list to be good and the other half filled with units that do not accomplish a lot (there are a few in every codex)?

My theory is that that is tossed in so that people don't get too much flak from replies along the lines of "OMG, those units are terrible, you are so stupid", etc.

Thoughts?

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

Friendly: not looking to drop kick anyone, just using stuff I have already got, or painted well etc.

Semi-Competitive: minor tweaks with wargear/unit options I already have...looking to add one or two things.

Competitive: I can do anything and will have the ability/drive to get any list to 'bend my opponents over a chair'...

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

To me, semi-competitive is for people who are afraid of getting called cheesy, which is an accusation used more freely than bad advice in the army list section.

Unfortunately, regardless of how "non power list" your list is, if you're a tactically sound player you can monkey-stomp someone with a completely off-the-wall list and get accused of being cheesy for using non-traditional stuff.

I have to say, I do enjoy the imagery conjured by the word 'monkey-stomp'.

Monkey-stomp....here's an example.

One of the players at a store where I play is primarily Tau. In a recent tournament, he faced me first round (I was playing mechanized Orks), and he conceded during Turn2 after losing half his army and I hadn't lost a single model or transport. He got monkey-stomped. I tried to offer him tactical advice on some serious mistakes he made (who keeps half of a Tau army voluntarily in reserve to play for a late-game tie?).

His contention was that Tau simply aren't competitive. I challenged him to a game the following week where I'd play his army against anything he liked. We met for an 1,850 game and he had made a Spacewolves army; table-quarters meant he was outflanking close to my stuff which was quite uncomfortable...

I lost half of two firewarrior squads in exchange for tabling him. Monkey-stomped again.

Monkey-stomp connotes a serious beat down.

To me, semi-competetive means those units that aren't as uber as they could be (or would be uber if they cost less points or something) but can still have a place in a fully competitive army. (Or they could be units that have a place in a competitive army....if you can find a place for them)

Examples include things like Possessed, Vanguard vets, sternguard vets (yes, them too), Chosen, Guardians and Grots.

Hey now!

Possessed, Chosen, and Grots are frakkin' uber!

A 31 model unit sitting on an objective with a 3+ save while costing 107 points....yes please!

Tagging Possessed along with Abby in a Land Raider....hellacious!
