We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Infinity are such beautiful models...

How does the game shape up? How many figures do you need to play etc?

It is a super mega (perhaps a bit over) complicated at times, with tons of 'overwatch' type events taking place.

You don't need a ton of models to play, 10 to 15 to a side, at most, I think, at least right now (there are hints of bigger things to come?).

I'd recommend getting a demo or two to really help understand things.

Keep in mind, I've never had one, and never played a game (no one I know of near me!), so, this all comes from reading the rulebook and scanning various forums.

The miniatures were just too good for me to pass up any longer!

While the designs don't really sing to me, the quality of sculpting and dynamicism of some of the poses are outstanding.

I've always loved the moniker "boarding shotgun". To me, that says, "We're not fooling around".

I may have to get the Loup-Garous miniature just for the name.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

More Yu Jing to paint. sweeeeeet

These are some of the best minis I've ever bought; really crisp, sharp detail; varied, dynamic poses; consistent, realistic proportions... they're really a joy to paint.

I downloaded an earlier version of their rules (first english translation) about a year ago, and it was painful. As was mentioned above, there are lots of "overwatch" checks to make every turn. In addition, there are a ton of modifiers for everything you do. In all, it was a very dense, unpleasant read and none of the rules stuck in my mind as particularly clever or elegant.

That said, they released a full-colour rule book this year which may have simplified or clarified the rules, so I'd love to hear from someone who's tried it out more recently.

But yeah, those minis? Pure gold.

when i hear "the rules are complicated" i wonder how many other games do people play besides GW games? It seems daunting at first but get a demo in with someone that can speak clearly and has a good grasp on the rules. Don't do a full game but a light demo with not all the rules. Start adding in the complexity little by little and you will see it is quite a fun game. The miniatures themselves are a bit higher than other skirmish level games. BUT that being said being a skirmish game it will only set you back MAYBE the equivalent of 2-3 regiment boxes for a complete army.

Have you played the game? I'd like to hear your impression of it. I'm willing to take the plunge and buy the rulebook, but the downloadable rules wasn't presented in a way that allowed for gradual immersion so I'm waiting to hear some reviews first.

I certainly enjoy games with more depth and detail than 40k, so I still have hope for Infinity.

Buy the Rule-book, take the plunge....don't bother comparing it to WH40K, it belittles Infinity to do so, they're different.

If you want to play something other than WH40K, I'd say do it, but don't dip your toe into the water, that way you never fully make the move.

I definitely dig the Loup-Garous, though the helmet visor leaves me a little cold.
Still, more nice figs from Infinity. I am not a huge fan of the fancy techy aesthetic, but they are still sharp and great looking. Not enough to make me invest in the game though.

Actually i have been playing this game for the last few years and it has always been great fun. What everyone refers to that gets confusing at first is..

Each player has a turn made up of a certain amount of orders (orders are however many models you have +1 for leader and any other special abilities). The active player does an action with any miniature for ever order he has in his pool.

The Reactive player is the defender, in so far as he doesn't get orders till his (active) turn. Every time an active player moves a miniature within LOS of a reactive miniature the reactive miniature gets an ARO (auto matic response order). This can range from a snap shot (1 shot from a weapon) to moving deeper into cover or out of line of sight).

Now you can ask what is the advantage of being the "active player". Well even the most basic rifle in Infinity has a burst of 4, which means for every action you spend to shoot you get 4 shots, while the reactive player only gets 1 if he decides to shoot back.

Next confusing thing is MOS (margin of success) lets take the above example the Active player has a basic infantryman shoot his rifle at a reactive player's infantryman after deciding modifiers the Active player finds out he needs a 14 or lower on any of his 4 dice. The reactive player decides that in a firefight his soldier wouldn't last so instead decides to dodge into cover from the incoming bullets lets say he needs a 12..

The active player rolls 9, 8, 10, 13 the reactive player rolls an 11. Now here is the tricky part for most people... Though the active player in theory scored four hits ( he rolled lower than 14 on all his dice) the reactive player dodged all but 1 hit because it was higher than his dodge roll (his dodge of 11 vs the 13 of the active player). At which point the defending miniature would have to make one armor save to stay alive or he will go unconscious (so that maybe a medic can make it to him on time before he dies).

If i have ANY complaints about Infinity is that it requires a lot of terrain in order to not make one sided battles. Of course this is sort of the point of the game fighting in sprawling cities/dense forests and the such. But once you play it in a nice full city street your whole way of viewing the game changes.

In fact because me and the group play so many other skirmish games we rarely get to play a lot of Infinity. Though i am still hooked and I attempt to go to the Infinity National Tournament at Gen Con every year. Because the guys running it always have amazing detailed terrain (Thanks Table Top Gamers!) for the game on every table making it THAT much more fun to play.

Feel free to ask away any other questions or ask for clarifications if you want to know more about the game. Though I admit that i haven't gotten the new rulebook yet the basics of the game remain the same just a few units received updated rules/stat changes.

Thanks cerealkiller195, I appreciate the review Here's a few more questions for you:

1) How long does an average game last? (assuming a decent amount of terrain...)
2) Does the rulebook come with scenarios?
3) Is there more to the game than killing all of your opponents?
4) Are there any limitations to making an army list? I remember needing to keep to 10 models per "group" or something. I don't remember if models are considered "elite", "troops" etc. and if there any limitations.

I've seen new box sets from Corvus Belli with about 6-7 minis. Are these box sets enough to start, along with maybe one or two blisters?

I'll buy their minis no matter the rules, I'm trying to figure if I can get my gaming group to invest.

After getting burned by Confrontation and AT-43, I'm definitely going to test the waters before making the plunge. I've got a pretty limited hobby budget, so paying $30 for a rulebook I don't use robs me of two blisters that I can pretend that I'll get around to painting some day.

no problem anything I can do to help, I wish I could play Infinity more but being a play tester for other games as well as trying out just about every skirmish game out there add in real life and video games and you can barely game at all.

1) In an average game with good coverage of terrain and places to hide most games are easily under an hour once you have the rules down. With a possibility of reaching maybe an hour or an hour and a half depending on play style (some people like to plan very carefully).

Every tournament that i have been to was 3-4 rounds done in about an hour to an hour and a half, people usually finish way before that. Infinity is a very brutal game in so far as if you make a mistake it will cost you greatly especially against experienced players. Though if your group is just starting since you are all on the same skill level that isn't really a worry.

2/3) the first edition rulebook didn't have any scenarios though i believe the second one will. Most casual games are kill them all or we make special conditions that have to be achieved.

In some games you must have a hacker go into a neutral computer station download the information and make a run for it. It really does depend on the scenario most are snatch and run/stay alive.

4) as far as limitations the list will usually say "0-2" or say straight out what is the limit and on what kind of soldiers. Most troops fall into two broad groups "regular" and "irregular", regular troops are trained/battle ready troops. While irregulars are militia type units, the difference in Infinity is that if you have a mix of both they cannot share their orders (actions) with one another.

For example if you have 2 irregular troops and 8 regulars, the 2 irregulars do not contribute towards the pool only they can use their own orders or those of the Regular infantry. While the Regular infantry cannot take from the "irregular" pool. Note that you can make an army of irregular miniatures and everything would work out fine between them.

What I usually do when i want to demo/introduce a game to my group is by 2 starters, one for myself and one that I know someone in the group would like. That way they can just buy it outright from you if they are interested. Failing that pick another army that appeals to you visually just in case your friends want to play different armies.

I would suggest wandering onto the boards and reading some battle reports to get a good feel of the game. It is very cinematic and entertaining.
