Recently I have been trying to form a Salamanders army and have hit a problem. I want to give Vulkan a Command Squad but his name is not in the list of allowed special characters, but I have seen him with a Command Squad in White Dwarf and according to his fluff he can call on anything and anyone from the Salamanders, so technically he should be able to, so now im stuck, anyone able to enlighten me on this issue?

He's not a captain, therefore can't take a command squad.

But he may join another captains command squad.

Solution: Take vulcan and 1 captain, get access to a command squad, attach vulcan to it.

Rules do not say he can take a Command Squad. Thus, he cannot take a Command Squad.

Rule do not say he can take an Honour Guard. Thus, he cannot take an Honour Guard.

I think it was an oversight on GW's part, as the fluff entry for Vulkan clearly states that his name is one "Captain He'Stan". In the nuts and bolts, there might have been some background debate about whether to classify him as a Chapter Master or Company Captain, and the end result was that he fell through the cracks in the codex entry.

Personally, I probably wouldn't question it in the least if my opponent showed up with an entourage for Vulkan, but TFG's might have an issue.

Not just TFGs. I think a lot of people would have problems with that, even for friendly games. Vulkan is good enough as is... he doesn't need a Command Squad and even it doesn't even make sense from a fluff perspective.

No, you can't.

That's the reason I usually just use a regular captain.

Build a fire for a man and he will be warm for a day; set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain.

Sly Marbo doesn't go to ground, the ground comes to him.

He was a captain, but got promoted (or honored which ever it is) to be the next Forgefather, a rank that is specific to the Salamanders. So he isn't a Captain any more, so according to Codex: Space Marines he is not eligible to have a Command Squad. Also, he is not a Chapter Master (Which is Tu`Shan by the way).

So he really didn't fall through any cracks, as he does not have the required rank to meet the criteria for a Command Squad.

So, in friendly games, I could see if your opponent let you have Vulkan with a Command Squad, that's fine. But anywhere else, you will most likely encounter problems with it.

He singlehandedly killed about 25 boyz, 12 kommando's, and my warboss in a game! 2+/3++ with EW, and S6 PW is ridiculous. I hit him with a whole squad of boyz, next turn I deffrolla'd him and he walked away! I have never spouted so many curses and slurs at an inanimate object b4.

Sonofa b****! He woulda been dead way earlier from the 1 wound my boss caused him then! That woulda changed the whole dynamic of the game... Well that would be an honest mistake on my opponents part, he is the most honorable player in the group, besides it ended as a draw! Now a rematch is required though...

Well like I said that just means a rematch of epic (not really) proportions! And despite how bad he hurt me with vulkan because of it, it is still not as bad as the SW vs. Daemons 2k points matchup my other buddies did in which Njal Stormcaller killed, I believe it was, 1350/2000 of the guys daemons... I think my head would explode if that happened to me.

I do hope the Dæmon player remembered that Njal can only negate Psychic Powers, of which none are found in the Dæmon Codex

Well I just jumped back into 40k, and thus know very little about SW. The slaughter involved some kind of ability that hits everyone not engaged in combat, another that reminded me of fury of the ancients, and something that auto kills a critter that fails an init check. As I haven't even looked in the army book it was greek to me.
