I recently had all my hair shaved off to baldness for Children in Need and now I wonder, why would you want to go bald?! I mean, it's bloody cold, has lots of people staring (admittedly I'm quite young for a bald person), feels odd and gets some 'stick'. And now I don't have any 'luscious locks' to run my hands through! lol

The only advantage I have found is that you don't have to wash it and I'm not lazy enough to make that matter for me. I also recognise that some people say that you're likely to go bald eventually so why not do it with grace etc. but to this I say, why not keep your hair and then go bald just as it starts to receed!

So Dakka, why go bald?

I went about 40% bald against my will. (Actually the hair is still with me, it just grows out of my ears and nose now...) I keep the rest buzzed down to a barely noticeable fuzz just because I don't want to mess with it.

Never going to happen.

I got the thick hair gene in my family, so I see no reason to go against nature.

Plus, I've not had my hair cut for 3 or 4 years.

surely we go bald involuntarily? I mean, when people recede they shave all their hair off as bald shaved looks better than a nasty comb over, but .. we dont WANT to go bald, it just happens as you get older!

True, but some people do go bald voluntarily and I wonder why?...

Not always, my grandfather had thick hair at 70 just before he died, my father has it at 55, and mine seems to be the same.

Something about first born sons in this family. I'll take it as a bonus.

Oh and like Mad Doc, not cut my hair in years, when out of the 'tail' it's down to my backside.

I agree with the OP; When mine starts to go (not likely given my heritage) it'll get trimmed right down. Nothing worse than a comb over job.

I've had my head shaved a few times but working for Uncle Sam will do that to ya.

Having a shaved head feels great in hotter climates and imo is more comfortable if you have to wear hats and other headgear. Hair kind of gets in the way for a proper fit of military attire.

Well, I am considering it actually to give it a test run. My hairline is already receding (yay for male pattern baldness) so I'm gonna be bald by the time I'm 35 anyway

I just shaved my head - it's low maintenance, plus I look a bit 'harder' which helps.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Actually true, that is one thing, it does make me look 'harder'...

But Cane has a good point, however its a point that doesn't apply to most...

Having done very very long hair and a clean shaven I can tell you they both have their benefits. The cold head aspect does go away after awhile, it is just not a sensation that you are used to.

While utility (as Cane mentioned) is often one reason really, like anything ornamental, people usually do it because they like the look of it.

I plan on doing it because it'll save me ~€150 a year on haircuts, gel and Shampoo

@GWAR!: Place hair in ponytail, measure down the width of two fingers, use scissors to remove hair beyond this point. Get girlfriend to tidy it up a bit if you can be bothered.

This will save you money on haircuts, and you can just steal the missus's shampoo! (unless it smells of apricots. just wait for it to rain instead)

You think I leave my basement for a missus?

Or showers for that matter?

Yes, the Skalds tell of a legend. In times long past, there was a great fire dæmon of the sky! But she was defeated by the mighty English Weather Giants!

The truth has been spoken.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.
