So as I continue to toy with various KoS lists I was wondering if regular Warbikes have a place in the army. Or in any Ork army really.
If so how many are needed to be effective and what roll should they play?

You need exactly zero to be the absolutely most effective possible with them.
Take boys in trukks if you want speed.

Or Nob bikers?
|
This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Actually i like warbikers, perhaps its just because it fits in my army, but i think theyre quite good. Theyre fast have lots of attacks and two wounds as well, i quite like them. They may not be as good as deffkoptas but theyre cheaper. I'm going to get quite a big unit, i probably wont use all of them but they look quite good as a a big gas-belching unit, especially in a speed freeks army.
As for nob bikers theyre good as they have higher S etc. Theyre quite expensive but are effective. Im planning on perhaps a unit of 5, 4 BC and one PK.

Thats totally right except for the fact that they dont have lots of attacks (same as boyz).. they dont have 2 wounds.. and cost the price of 4 boyz
Maybe youre thinking of NOB bikers which are DRASTICALLY different

The short ranged weapons are a pain - they can't lurk at a safe(ish) distance like a kopta or buggy with big shootas. If you can keep them at a distance where they can shoot lots without getting charged, they can have their uses.

I like the old rules for bikes, you could shoot in the shooting phase, then in the assault phase, and by the time you actualy started fighting your enemy they had eaten a minimum of 18 twin linked strength shots.

I'd say they can be useful. Though they are relatively expensive, they are T 5, and can survive shooting better then most Ork units. They automatically get a 4+ cover save, so except against heavy flamers they get a 50% chance at surviving the shooting. If you expect them to rip through units, that simply is not going to happen, they are made to tie up units so they cannot shoot at the rest of your boyz. I'd say a good 6-9 unit should serve your purpose well enough.
Nob Bikers are expensive, but you can make them even further protected with a Painboy, and giving them Cybork bodies, that means that whatever is being thrown at them they get a save, and when they get into close combat they won't get destroyed by powerfists or power weapons.
More importantly to me at least, Orks on motorcycles is hilarious.

A 12 Man squad with Nob w/ Claw is 335
It has 36 ST5 shots that are twinlinked at Ballistic 2 and a effective range of 30 inches.
44 STR4 attacks on the charge
4 ST9 on the charge.
If you take Wazzadakka who is crazy good at 180 points he makes them troops. They're worth th2e points for all that they have the problem is also that low leadership but meh that is orks.
3 Squads of that with Wazzdakka is 1150 or so points but its 108 ST5 shots.
Not many squads can handle that a 10 man terminator squad shot and charged with that will have a hard time as well.
People are just uper crazy bout Nob Bikers.

I personally have 2 squads of 6 bikes... 1 squad has a powerklaw and the other one is for my Warboss on a bike for extra wounds.
I love them because I chase Eldar and Tau vehicles... I got the toughness, cover and armor saves to lve long enough till the assault.
If anything they attract a lot of fire away from my 120 boyz and my 2 trukks with 2 squads of shoota boyz...

I think warbikers could be a good screen for the boyz. They can also keep your long battlewagons from getting flanked and shot in the sides (unless the enemy has deep-striking units) so in any army the have a purpose at least
Also, do not forget that despite the fact they are mounted on bikes, they are still sluggaboyz, only they have 4+ armor instead of 6+
The only issue is their high price, if you want to use them you can, but they aren't very points efficient.

That was perfectly stated. Regular bikers are pretty effective if used right, just like everything else in the Ork codex.
