It's time for the 2009 year in review!! Ok, well perhaps it is a bit early, but we thought since the holidays are upon us why not give the status on the games we talked about this year? Along with some of our thoughts on the state of the industry.
But before that, Russ reports on his and Nicole's adventures at Carnage 2009 during Achievements in Gaming.
And don't miss the special "Words from Wales" this episode... Owen brings us news of some of his adventures at the Alamo GT.
All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:
- The Hollywood Minute
- Rapid Fire
- What's in the News
- Words from Wales..er Texas
- & More

I would just like to point out to everyone that the music at the beginning and end of my segment is not my work. I would like to officially distance myself from this music and make it clear that I am in no way associated with it.
Furthermore I would like to demand that Russ make a full and frank admission of guilt regarding the music and that he make a public apology on the next episode of the D6 G.
Not since "The Chicken song" has a piece of music caused so much offence.
Apologise Russ , apologise.

I haven't got up to the WFW segment yet, but now I'm really looking forward to it (more than I usually do I mean...) Anything that can so anger a Welshman can't be *all* bad!
EDIT: I've now listened to it, and loved it. Russ, I think that music was an entirely appropriate selection. Wales is definitely a backward and almost sub-medieval state and all associations with it of rustic dance music are entirely appropriate!
And Owen, great segment. Great to hear more "roving reporter" type stuff from shows! And I hope your cold gets better soon. Maybe wearing red flannel next your your chest and rubbing yourself with the urine of a red-haired goat might do something. I hear access to modern medicine isn't all it could be in the deep Welsh countryside...?

Thanks for the scoop on the GW WWII game - has anyoone else heard about this?
I've been toying with the idea historicals for years, but never pulled the trigger for multiple reasons: FOW scale is too small, other rule sets are hard to find, and opponents are hard to come by.
IF GW started a game that would give me a rules set to use and was compatible with the nicely sized 20mm / 1/72 scale historicals that are widely available, I would be very excited. Anyone else heard about this?

The best part of this episode, was the discussion Raef raised, is the market flooded or about to become flooded with board games.
My thought is it might be, but we as gammers will never notice, because we are gamers and therefore are packrats by nature, there will never be enough games out there.
take it from me I owned a 9000pts orc and gobbo army before I had even played a game of WHF. I don't even want to guess how big the size is now I'm playing.

I really see Raef's point of there being too many games. Mostly from a time perspective. I have a pile of board games that I get to play one or two a month. I have a bookshelf dedicated to my roleplaying books, with support materials for 25 different game types. In the past year, I haven't played any of them; and I'm contemplating getting Rogue Trader to add to the shelf.
I'll quit before I grow too maudlin about my personal drought of gaming. Fortunately, there is a consistent 40K league that I get to play in, but that will always be a 40K league night. Never Warmachine/Hordes, Malifaux, or Arcane Legions. Again, time robs choice from me.
Nicole - Thank you for not killing Russ.
Owen - While the music choice was not the most complimentary, you did go to Texas. All the fine states of America, and you chose Texas...well, maybe the pixie music was needed to remind you not to make that error again. Not that I have anything bad to say about Texas...I'm just disappointed with the state as a whole.
As for starship battle books for the list, Iain M. Banks's Use of Weapons is good.

Use of Weapons? I don't remember too much starship battle in there, though Iain M. Banks does put some of that in books like Consider Phlebas and Excession.
My suggestion for fightin' rocketship books is "The Lost Fleet" by Jack Campbell, which is a touch like the Honorverse books but, I think, a bit more sophisticated and with slightly cooler tech. The first, "Dauntless", isn't bad, but they get better with "Fearless". It's a closed-ended series of 6 books. Definitely worth a look.
Then there's "The Star of the Guardians" which is a cool little trilogy (and then quadrilogy) by Margaret "Dragonlance" Weis, with a lot of Star Wars influence and a little bit of Ancient Greek, and some French Revolution. Some neat stuff.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys! I'll definitely give those books a look-see!
I'm still torn about the market flooding issue, because I think Russ and Raef are arguing two different points. I think Raef is looking at it from a personal, what's good/bad for ME perspective, and Russ is looking at it from a what's good for the industry point of view. I think, mainly because of what Ray said, that the industry is doing just fine. We'll keep buying the damned games as long as they make them. But I see the issue Armandloft raises, and this is the one that I think of the most: There are already too many games for me to be sure that the ones I WANT to play each Tuesday will get played regularly. It's not a commentary on the industry (except maybe that it's going strong), but more on the selfish viewpoint of the gamer's environment being so target rich that you can't settle on one game long enough to get a lot of satisfaction out of it before the next hotness rolls down the street.
For those of us who like to settle on a game for awhile with our friends, maybe get a campaign or a league out of it before we move on, this really does pose a problem.
On the other hand, who am I to complain? I just jump on the bandwagon with everyone else, and don't help the situation any at all.
As long as there are more and more games, though, I don't see our gaming group settling down for any length of time at all. Except maybe WM II, with my luck. We'll be playing that for a decade . . .

So, just picked up the first book in the Lost Fleet series. Looks like a great call! Now I'm a little resentful that I have to finish the book I'm reading currently. The first in the Lt. Leary series (forget the author). Not a bad book, but zero space combat, so not really scratching the itch I'm looking to scratch, as HD Dolby Surround 4.6 Sacramento would say.
But I'm getting that cool feeling in my spine that you get when you think you've found a new series that's going to rock, and take at least a little while to read.
Can't wait. Thanks, Calculon! I mean, Squideye!

Dammit Craig, this wait for Firestorm Armada is frustrating isn't it!! I had to go and print off and read a copy of GZG's free Full Thrust II just to scratch my own space combat itch. It's a completely different game, but you kjnow how it is!
Anyhow, today maybe the day it arrives. Now, where's that danged good-for-nothing, lazy postman got to? The post should be here already! Nnnnnnnghj!

I just heard your podcast about how it is hard to play Warmachine without the cards. While I agree, I have only known Warmachine as a miniatures player. Don't you guys play 40K without player aids? How do you manage that?
Would you then really have missed the player aids in Warmachine if the game didn't have them in the first place? I guess what I'm alluding to is whether Warmachine is getting dinged because they created something better in the first place and now it's missing (temporarily).
BTW, how many people generally show up to your Tuesday gaming nights at the store?

I am not having any issues playing WM right now. I printed the cards at 2 to a sheet.
cut them up and I have big cards. effectively no different from MkI.
The cards take up a bigger space of the table, but I can read them without picking them up.
Are they trying to play using the pdf on an iPhone? Then I understand the issue.

Craig, out of curiousity: who brings the games at these game evenings? I myself am in a somewhat unique position, because in my games group, as the organiser I'm the guy who brings the games. This is also because my group is mostly casual gamers, and I'm one of the few "hardcore" gamers there. So if I want a certain game to be played (or not played) I make sure I bring it (or leave it at home). Even so, my group still surprises me. Like last week, after weeks of bringing Bang! along to the games evenings, all of a sudden it became a big hit! And it went unplayed for all this time I brought it with me. And there are other games, things I've had for some time but which are still unplayed, and no matter how many times I take them along, there's rarely enough interest in playing them.

On the wizkids tip during your time at Carnage.
Wizkids was acquired by a company called National Entertainment Collectibles Association Inc. (NECA).
http://www.necaonline.com/
You may know them already as a company that has a large selection of licenses for movies, video games, etc for making toys.
Heroclix is back in for sure as they have announced the release of the hammer of thor expansion on the wizkids site. Traffic is still being directed to wizkids.com presumably so that previous customers can still see their presence, even if the site is very sparse.
Thanks for the news wizkids at carnage. I know that they are umuch reviled by wargamers, but the Pirates! line as well as a few others are very good games in their own right.
This gives me hope that Pirates will make a comeback in some fashion. Hopefully they will follow FFG's new non collectible tactic of removing the blind buy aspect from their marketing strategy.

Just wondering about your tastes in games developing. With recent departures into the Wild West with Gutshot, and then that melding into the Wild West/Horror/Steampunk game of Malifaux, where they will go next? I'm hoping the magpie will fly off into the wider world of Steampunk and specifically VSF (Victorian Science Fiction). I'm currently painting a fleet up for Aeronef (Wessex Games), and really enjoy playing Land Ironclads (Brigade Games) - both are cheap-as-chips to get into (think Uncharted Seas but cheaper - you can download the Aeronef rules for $6 and buy a fleet for $30). There are loads of 28mm stuff in the genre too: G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. is a micro-skirmish game similar in tone and intensity to Gutshot and Malifaux, so maybe that might attract you? Some of my favourite minis are made by Eureka as their "Pax Limpopo" range and they have some wonderful mini-games in the genre too ("Pig-tickling" is one of our favourite "fill-in" games at our club). Just sayin' is all! P.s. And in no way is my attempting to get you to try new games revenge for all the new games you have forced me to buy... *mutter mutter, playing Warhammer Invasion tomorrow at club mutter mutter can't afford any Christmas presents for the children now I've spent all my money on new games mutter mutter the wife is threatening to throw me out into the snow mutter mutter mutter*

I'm working my way through Episode 44 (in bite-sized chunks as frequently suggested by Craig) and I just listened to a brief discussion on the "state of gaming" in which Raef suggested that GW was mending its ways and becoming more customer-friendly. Both Russ and Craig didn't seem to completely agree but thought GW might be taking some baby steps in the right direction.
However, I think the podcast was recorded prior to the GW files purge at BGG. Given this latest example of GW's mistreatment of its fan base, does anyone really think GW will ever change its ways?

Hey Guys:
I forget to check over here once in a while.
Owen's music is perfect. I love it. Probably because Owen hates it so much.
I liked his interview too. I looked into the Weird WWII site and liked the models very much. If I do not get too lazy I will reach out to them to learn more.
Don't forget FOW action coming soon.
The new Firestorm Armada does look very cool. Yeah, Norbort, with 40K we did use Army Builder for Stats. I do miss the cards too. It seems to fumbly to use all those pages now for some reason.
And my brain just shut down to write anything more intelligent.

Hey Norbert,
Warmachine is a little different than 40k in that you DO need the cards to play. Not only do they contain rules, but as you well know they contain the hit boxes and damage locations on the jacks.
So in order to play a mark II game today, players must somehow make a set of cards for their stuff that will work. It's not a problem for me, as I cut out the cards from the stuff at GenCon and have made other cards for my stuff.
But usually whoever I'm about to play hasn't so we have to play a game with constant looking at the PDF's etc.
Of course, this will all be fixed in a couple short months when the new Mark II decks hit the street. I can't wait!! Automatically Appended Next Post: Marximus wrote:However, I think the podcast was recorded prior to the GW files purge at BGG. I agree with you Marximus. GW seems to be cracking down on any fan created content anyplace. Which is too bad for the hobby. The BGG purge really surprised me, I thought that was a bit far even for GW.

Just wanted to let the guys know at the D6 generation they are doing a fantastic job with there podcast i really look forward to listen to you guys talk about games.
I did try and leave feedback on itunes but it keeps coming up with a stupid error every time and thought I'd join up on the forums to leave my impressions here.
The Rapid Fire segment took a little to get used to and to be honest when i first listened to your show i nearly turned it off. But now look forward to it.
Oh yeah,i listened to an earlier pod and it had Hollywood's minute segment when raif had a guilty admission of liking pop music and to much dismay and disbelief Britney Spears. There is help out there for you mate Ha...Ha...Ha

Owen: Great job on the interview with Grindhouse Games. Incursion is great fun, and the art and miniatures are excellent. I have all of the figures, a 75% complete 3D board, and the final boardgame on per-order. It might be worth a "Cage Match" review alongside Space Hulk when it is finally released.

Fan of the podcast and great episode guys!
On boardgames: I really like what Fantasy Flight Games has done with the Games Workshop IP. Games like Chaos In World and Invasion are really great crossover games between the miniature community and the board game community. I wonder when Fantasy Flight will do a 40k type board game. I can't imagine what would happen if they did...
On flooded gaming market: Does anyone think that the miniature market is saturated with many games? I could be wrong but I don't remember this many mini games out there years ago than today.
PS: Go Board games!
PPS: Starfarers of Catan is fun!
