So long as you are only playing one codex, marines or wolves, it should be fine.

thanks for such a fast response, just to clarify that means i have to treat both chapters as either space wolfs or use the space marine codex instead?

Yep thats it basically. Clear up before the games things like ... these Devastators are actually long fangs (or vise versa).

I suggest that when you make your army list you also include a note as to what will be fielded as each thing. So both you and your friend can check during the game.

Yep! Theres exceptions to certain armys (IG, demonhunters, sisters) but those are outlined in those codices. But as far as marines go I believe if you choose a chapter they all come from that chapter (imperial fists, blood angels, ravenwing/dark angels, space wolves, etc)

The eye of terror.

At the last big tourney I attended, one guy had an army painted up to represent all three space marine chapters present at the Battle for Armageddon.

They all just used the generic space marine rules, and it was a really sweet army to see.

You could always see if he'd mind you running two separate 1000 point armies, e.g., a complete force-org chart for each.

Since this requires four troop choices and 2 hq's at minimum, it shouldn't be too big a deal.

That's kind of a tricky question when balance is concerned though. Seeing as you could have up to 6 heavies/elites/fast whereas he'd still be limited to three.

Why not use both codex's? Nothing stopping you. Its a friendly game right. Your friend has a 2k force you have 2k if you mix armies. Take 2 forces each, mix and match, think outside the box. Try a last stand, one of your 1k forces vs his 2k force. Dont feel you 'have' to play just using the FOC and a tournament attitude.
Some of my most memorable games have been 1000pts vs a Stompa. Titan deathmatches, heroic last stands etc.
Its your game afterall. Have fun with it.

I like your answer! I have made some progress in getting my regular playing group to think like this.

yea. a cool way to play it would be you have one of your 1000 point armies on the table to start with. turn 3, the entire second army comes in from outflank or deepstrike, like they are reinforcing the other army...

objectives for your enemy could be your original HQ that was on the field, as he's trying to cripple that army. objective for you would be his army HQ.

The basic idea is that you can use two different "Factions" in one army as long as they are being run in the same 'dex.

I've played games sort of like this with my Tyranids. Start with a 750 Vanguard Force on the table (Broodlord, Stealers, Lictors), turn three the main army came on. We played an Annihilation style game with no turn limit to show how Tyranids eat everything and only stop when completely wiped out.
Point is, be creative like other said. Make up your own missions as long as your friends are okay with it.
