Hi guys, I have a videogame-related question I hope somebody can answer me:

I've played the first Assassin's Creed for only half an hour or so, I was also busy with Fallout 3 at the moment. It felt a bit weird and I really disliked the Sci-Fi angle to the plot. However, the new game looks fantastic and I really wanna play it. It's been out for a week now and I was hoping someone could tell me, if I can play the new game without knowing the plot of the original. Is there much I need to know? Is the first one worth playing or should I just check out the story online?

There is no real story worth mentioning in assassin's creed. If you've played the first few missions you get the gist. The second does follow on from the first though. It is still a pretty game and worth playing for the immersion if not for the repetitive missions. If you don't have the patience google the plot before you dive into two.

It will be really confusing trust me.

Thanks garret, that's pretty much what I needed to hear. Aw well, at least Gamestop has a nice AC1 bundle with the new Prince of Persia.

I'd just like to come in here and make an observation, if you will...

The story is awful. I mean, really, really bad. I'm a storyline fanatic, and I can't enjoy a game with a bad story. How bad? Well...
Spoiler:
It plays on the 2012 Doomsday card, which has been proven false over and over.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I'm liking it so far. Sure, the whole story is kinda oddball, but I'm focussing on revenge, not some stupid "we all lie" story.

I'm not bothering with 1 or 2. Eagerly awaiting number 3 though. Near-future free world? Why thank you!

If you want a fun, modern/near future open-world game, try Prototype instead.

It's even more fun activating your shield and running down a busy street at full pelt.

I loved the story. Especially all the cryptic messages at the end. Also ifyou can get it cheap enough you should get it and be the judge youe self Anung.

AC3 will be set during WWII from what the developers have been hinting at.

I'm also kind of a story-nut when it comes to videogames. But there are so many games out there I want to play I'm not sure if I can find the time for a Game I didn't really enjoy on my first try. Maybe I'll give it another chance. When I tired it the last time I was mostly thinking about getting back to Fallout 3 anyway.

@BrookM: that's what I've heard too, though Feudal Japan would also make for a very interesting setting. Ninja Assassin's anyone?

it helps to know the story so it makes sense because it carries on directly from the first one and there is quite a bit to know.i would say by the game its cheap any way

I dunno really I played the first one and got about half way through until i thought this is repetitive and crap and turned it off and left it on my shelf.

I took a gamble on this one, and so far I am really enjoying it. I can follow the story well enough to work out what happened in the first one to make it not have a detremental effect on the second one and unlike cheese i'm kinda enjoying the story, now that I have a grasp of why things are going on I can follow it alot better, the 1st one kinda dumped you into the whole your an assassin but not an assassin this one gives you a reason to be Ezio and hes a far more likeable character than Altair you train Ezio to be an assassin not you are an assassin to begin with. Granted i'm still not 100% sold on the whole unlocking memories thing but its a nice twist on it.

That and the gameplay is so much better the missions are varied and fun, that being said its more like AC1.5 than 2 its essentially the game AC1 should have been.

When you give total control to a computer, it’s only a matter of time before it pulls a Skynet on you and you’re running for your life.

I think I'm giving AC1 a try. It's only 10 bucks on amazon, and if the series continues like this, I wanna know the full story. Especially with the new "the truth" feature in the 2nd game.

Fair enough I would warn you though the mission structure ofAC1 does get so repetitive it's not even funny, tbh the whole the truth thin is the one thingthats bugging me solving annoying pointless puzzles for a seconds worth of video that from what I can tell even when youget all 20 secs of still will make no bloody sense.

I'll stick to wholesale murder just got altairs armour too, best armour in the game and it looks awesome.

It does get repetitive yes but the combat system is so refined that it is so simple yet so hard to fight it. it worth it trust me.

I enjoyed AC1 but was bored by the repetitive missions a lot.

AC2 is muuuch better and I find myself playing it in 3-4 hour stretches at a time. When AC1 was out I was lamenting how good a game it could have been, AC2 is that game. The story is enjoyable and combined with the environment does a good job at drawing me in.

Well, you NEED to know what desmond saw and who/what altair is. As others said, google it and you can probably find a synopsis of the storyline to catch you up. Assassins Creed 2 is an insanely great game...

Wherever I want to be

the story in the first one isn't really important in AC 2, but there are some parts that help you understand it better. For the most part, you don't need to know things from the first to have fun in the second.

I'm kinda a plot-nut and if the reviews are any indication about the future of the franchise, I prefer to be in from the start.
