O.K. so my friend told me about a game he just played, he had a full squad of 30 grotz and 3 rutherd, they charged a monsterous creature to try and slow it down. He expected to tie it up for a couple turns (the squig hounds to keep them in fighting order) any who, he had spent some points to give all the rutherds grot prods, and long story short, he actually killed it. Is this a viable tactic? Or just a fluke?

Well, they are poisoned weapons, and with all those grots to soak up wounds. . .
Nope, sounds good to me. Of course, a high armor save would laugh, and then slaughter them mercilessly.

by kill them slaughter them mercilessly you mean kill like 2-3 a turn after the charge? id hardly call that slaughtering, not to mention the chance at just massive whiffage from bad rolls, a squad of grots could tie a carnifex up the entirety of a game lol.

So in practice it is viable, for fighting Nidzillas and DP?

I guess I never thought about it like that, but if you want to give your ultimate tarpit some teeth, the Grot prod isn't a bad idea....but I wouldn't call it a good idea either, simply because Grots find themselves being shot at far more than being chopped up. The thirty man unit is also so huge that a winged DP can just fly to it's 'bad side' and engage nothing but grots (because the Grot Prods won't be close enough.) If your smart about your spacing and your pile in move though, I guess it could work, just remember, Grots are not an elite combat unit, they are GROTS, if they kill a carnifex that's just a bonus.

Really this tactic depends mainly on the save the creature gets. Its its better then 4+ you might be at it awhile. But yes it CAN be a viable option. They either are just meat shields, or used like that. Take that squad set up against say a C'Tan and you have a pretty good chance of taking that sucker down. Same with some demons. Simply because there is SO MANY grots to soak up attacks, you can feasibly take out the big guys.

LOL, I can see it now, the special ops of grotz. I just think for the points you might as well. Plus the look on your opponent's face would be priceless "My 200 point MC was killed by what?!"

I enjoy using a similar tactic with Grotesques and a Hamonculi with scissorhands. Works nice wonders on Daemon Princes.

I have done this a few times in friendly games, Grotz are a major pain when trying to hold up a major enemy.

Fighting a DP its viable. Less likely, however, than fighting a Nidzilla army. Against Nidz as long as your not fighting a 2+ Carni or HT you can maybe kill it over a few turns!
And if your fighting a DP (especially if it has warptime), expect to lose 18 or so grots within the first 2 rounds of combat (if you don't wound it)

Yeah, Warptime DPs and Carnies with their uber multi attack upgrades can both sneer at this sort of tarpit. You just jump on high toughness MCs without a lot of attacks though, and slowly whittle them away.

Even a regualr 30 grot 3 rutherd mix makes one enemy lose 3 attacks a turn, now that would take a long time to clear. Warptime excluded.

Well like I said, it really depends on WHAT your going against. I wouldnt try that against terminators or something with a good save. Simply because the chances of it working are slim. But they WILL however hold up said terminator squad rather nicely.
Infact swarms are a pain for the majority of SMs. They just dont get enough attacks off to take out the grot mob. Infact I saw a scarab swarm hold up a full strength tactical squad for 4 turns I think it was. 3 or 4. Pretty effective, as soon as the marines FINALLY broke through the scarabs, POW with guass guns lol
