So I had some ruins many years old and I thought I would give them new life. My painting still sucks since then but anyways...

I put this one on a base, I think that's important and alot more fun to play with than just unbased ruins on a battlefield. I was going to paint it brown then spread some flock and static grass around the area but I was out of any brown paint so I decided to go with an "Aquatic" world. This only because I have a slowed amount of blue paints. I was thinking my Ice Blue would look great here. It's great for highlighting but I also think the ruins look kinda cool unhighlighted.

The pictures will look like the ruins are thick painted and not painted well. The paint was still wet when I took the pictures and I just did one fast coat so I need to go back and give it an even second coat. The base as well shows alot of the white basecoat. This can look ok as it mixes in well with water like colors forming "whitecaps" I guess. I can go back and give it an even second coat if I want later. I would also really like to buy some aquarium plants and add some to these terrain features I am working on.

At first I read this and I thought, "How could Aquatic World destroy your project?!?"

Seriously, that is a good original idea. You can use some plastic aquarium plants and "giant" seashells.

Hold the camera farther away so it can focus.

Keep us posted!

Fascinating idea, I really like the ruins! One question though: Is the base done up like water? If it is, take the blue, mix it up with some white, and add some lines around the rocks and buildings to make it look like the wake of the water is flowing around the objects. An Aquatic World table would be fun, maybe give everyone Slow and Purposeful to show them trying to get through the water (Glad Chimeras are Amphibious!) Hope to see more pics!

Very nice orcs indeed. Yeah I was planning on having the whole table count as water.

You don't happen to have an army full of Chimeras do you?

that looks awesome but yeah i agree with others in jest of course this will be a table where skimmers and chimeras will dominate.

glad I'm building a guard army in case i come across something of this nature

Are the armies going to be fully under water? or just around water?
I was thinking pet shops have TONS of nice stuff for you in the fish tank section!

Yeah I can't wait to do some terrain shopping in aquarium pet stores. I was going to do something like the table is in mostly shallow water.

Movement counts as difficult terrain and units not mounted in a vehicle must roll a d6 at the start of the movement phase, on a 1 they fall into deeper water and must take a leadership test to see if they drown, if they pass they come back up and move normally, if they fail they must roll armour saves for the entire unit. on a 2-5 they move up to the distance rolled for difficult terrain. On a 6 they move their normal movement.

Land Vehicles must take a dangerous terrain test at the begging of their movement phase, and they must roll a d6, on a 1 they are they crew shaken, on a 2-5 they move normally, on a 6 they move their normal distance and the vehicle becomes Hull Down.

Skimmers are flyers experience strange magnetic pulses from the planet so they count as moving into dangerous terrain at the end of their movement phase if they moved, and they must roll a d6 at the begging of the movement phase. On a 1 they are crew shaken, on a 2-5 they move normally, on a 6 they ignore the dangerous terrain for the turn and move normally.

Could be an example of the rules, but it would require it to be well thought out and balanced.

But ya I have 2 more small ruins and some craters here. So I will possibly work on some tommorow maybe. I plan to buy some larger ruined buildings from gw as well, those will make an excellent battlefield combined with the ruins I currently have.

I like the idea for the terrain, and I think if you work a bit more you might be able to cleverly replicate the look of underwater filtered light. Keep at it and keep posting pictures for us, please!

Rather than making complicated rules penalizing things for being in water, you could just presume that no land-based army is going to accidentally end up in an offshore battle. So when you play on your water board, assume all armies have been retrofitted to operate in that environment or are special naval equivalents to land vehicles. You could just assume all infantry have that army's equivalent of scuba gear, artillery are actually dropping depth charges, etc. Then all you have to do is make a couple of game-wide special rules to represent the table (for example, maybe infantry always move as if in difficult terrain but any infantry fired at beyond a certain range from the shooter get a cover save because of reduced visibility). You could tweak the table-wide special rules to make sure the codicies are balanced on it.

Second Ruins:

I did a little larger base so I could fit some good aquatic terrain features on this one. Only one coat again so you can see alot of the white primer on the base but I don't mind right now.

Crater:

I think it looks cool, i'll probably add some more blue colors like enchanted blue and add aquatic features but I am liking how it seems to fit into the aquatic world even though the craters are at first thought out of place.

Definitely need to do more work on the water, but you already know that. I LOVE the look of the ruins, though. I wouldn't touch them at all. The crater, however, isn't really working for me. I think I see what you're trying to go for, here, but it looks like the planet's surface was hit by two massive blue paintballs

I like the water pooling at the bottom and flowing out through the cracks, but water doesn't flow up walls. It's so glaringly inconceivable that it detracts from the piece. I think if you went back over it and kept the high parts rock and restricted the water to the lower portions where it would naturally pool and flow out, it would look a lot more like rocks jutting out of water that a double crater that got smeared in smurf-blood to fit your board.

Lots of work to be done - LOTS - to get this looking really good, but if you do it up right, you could have on hell of a snazzy board (and a pretty unique one, to boot). Solid start and lots of promise. Good luck and keep posting your progress!

So I start work on the 12th again. Hopefully I will get paid soon and be able to buy some aquarium goodies.

I have 4 more craters to paint up. I think I will test more blue colors on those first.

I'm also going to buy some large ruined buildings from GW. I think a couple of those look fantastic and would be a nice addition to this project.

I think it might also be interesting to add darker colors on the bases representing deeper water, like just a small circle area on the base or something, just a thought ^

Anyways, here's the last of my three small ruined buildings.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I think I probably would have done the craters almost as litle volcanic islands, rather than how you have done them (even if you put water pools in the craters themselves).

Not a huge fan of all the water running down the sides myself.

Otherwise, it is certainly an interesting idea.
