If you want a local syupply, what part of Oz are you in?

Plenty of hobby and model stores stock it.
Sydney or surrounds: From HobbyCo in the city (QVB), to Berg's Hobbies in Parramatta and many stores in between.
Melb: Victorian hobby Centre (Swanston), Hearns Hobbies (Flinders, down from the station towards the aquarium).
Adelaide has model railway and model stores too.

Brisbane I'm not sure of as I've not managed to get into it yet (spent plenty of time in transfer at BrisVegas airport though).

Depends on size and thickness. Evergreen packs (sheets are generally 30cmx15cm in a variety of thicknesses) go for usually between $7 and $10 (some thicknesses include multiple sheets. 1mm comes 2 sheets per pack. 1.5/2mm is one sheet. They use both mm sizing and a 3 digit code that is in thousandths of an inch (thous). So you'll see 040 which is 1mm, or 010 which is 0.25mm or 080 which is 2mm ( they start at 010 and go up to 080).
It also comes in larger (A2 or so) sheets if required. Some stores do not stock it and may have to order it in.

They also do variety/multipacks with a selection of thicknesses.

1 pack of the '040' (1mm) (2 sheets) is enough to make a scratchbuilt chimera (but you will have to source wheels from somewhere) for example.

For general construction of models, I use 1mm or 1.5mm (and with some bracing, it is sturdy enough.)

Usual tools for me are a variety of angle tools (set squares and rulers) for marking out angles and so forth. Cutting tools are an x-acto (or similar) and a rubber backed steel ruler (and of course a cutting mat).

Score and snap is the usual way of cutting the stuff. Score about half-way through and snap along the line. Clean up with sandpaper.

Glues readily with plastic glue (like most plastic model kits).

Plastruct and Evergreen are the two makers of sheet styrene that also make textured sheets, girders, tubing, rods, half-rounds, etc. for scale modelers.

Plastruct sells direct from their website:

Evergreen will provide you with a list of retailers who carry their product if you contact them through their website:

Hi

I am in the Plastics supply business. Plasticard is Styrene.

Hobby shops are great. If you are looking for large quantities or full sheets, look for a Plastics Distributor in your area. The prices will be alot cheaper and they may even have offcuts from cutting jobs that will be dirt cheap or even free.

They may even have offcut bins where you can get a bunch of raw material cheaply or free, such as Plexiglass or Sintra.

Just for example we would sell 1/16" x 48" x 96" Styrene for about $20.00 Canadian.

If you could tell me where you are I could give you some ideas as to who is close.
Alot of times it depends on the individual Branch and the people who work there.

We are somewhat relaxed here and I tend to be very Hobby friendly.

Check in your local yellow pages for Plastics Fabricators or Distributors and give them a call. If that doesn't work, let me know and maybe I can find one close to you.

Thanks mate, but I live in an isolated town of 12K people, there are no fabricators or even any jobs for literally a hundred miles.

I don't know how these folk's prices compare, but here's a place which I saw from another forum:
http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=22883&clickid=redirect
The only minor difficulty if you go looking for plastics suppliers is that you have to sort out the large scale plastics manufacturers (the guys who aren't going to want to ship $10 of plastic to a hobbyist) from the other companies who will deal with the small lots that hobbyists want.

Just remember: Everything worth getting, you can get delivered. Even if you live in the middle of nowhere, and you don't even have to tip the delivery guy.

Their prices look pretty good. You can also roll the Styrene so it is easier and cheaper for shipping.

Check also to see if they can cut the sheets, 24" x 48" is always a very easy and cheap way to ship.

We ship all the time and DHL or Fedex have some good rates, even to remote locations.

US Plastics is great, they roll the sheets into a tube so you get a 2X2X4 box delivered to your house.

I did a breakdown one time on how cheap it is from US Plastics versus Plastruct. It works out to be a quarter of the price to buy it from US Plastics than Plastruct, even at their "bulk" quantity price. You get a 42"X72" sheet for less than a 12"X36" sheet from Plastruct and US Plastics shipping is reasonable and fast. You could sell or give extra to your friends. I bought the 1mm(.040") and the 1.5mm(.060") pieces a couple of years ago, but they have some thicker and some thinner.

Plastruct is still the place to go to for textured sheet and structural shapes like angles and I-beams.

Well im Canadian Despite what it says on my flag, And im not sure if you have Rona's in the states but just the other day at Rona i found a 3 foot wide and 6 foot tall sheet of plastic card for 9 bucks. Normally it costs me 15 bucks to by a quarter of card. That officially became my plastic card source. Remember not everyone is a war gamer let alone a vet so if you ask someone for plastic card all you get is a blank face. Its sheet Styrene. Took me a year of searching for plastic card before i realized it was sheet styrene.

Hi all,

Just started on a bit of a scratchbuilding adventure. Trying to scratchbuild/kitbash a Looted Armageddon Pattern Basilisk.

Now I was wondering what is a good thickness plasticard for this job? I read in Chromedog's post that you can make a chimera out of 1mm, but I just made a mockup out of 2mm card and compared to that I think 1mm is a bit thin...

But on the other end, cheapskate as I am, the price for 2mm is about twice the price for 1mm. So I could obviously get more sheets for the same price. (which translates into more projects (custom killa kans, mega armoured nobz, etc. etc.)).

So I was hoping any of you guys could help me out on this one?

Thanks a lot!

I did use internal braces to keep the hull and tracks apart and to add strength, though.

I CAN stand on my chimera models and not crush them (and I'm 85kg). A lot depends on HOW you put the bits together.

2mm is a lot harder to cut and keep neat.
Laminating 1mm sheets gives you strength and ease of use - but needs more pieces. UP to you.

Go with the 1mm, double down if you need more structural integrity.

So 1mm it is!

Just getting rid of a nasty spyware thing I picked up downloading something suspicious... And then we're happpy again to go online-shopping and ordering in some plasticard!!!

Hope to get it early next week (back to work though...) so we can start doing some proper converting and building.

I am planning on keeping you all posted, but I won't promise anything as I know myself with these sort of things.

Thanks a lot anyway for your advise!
