Someone comes up to you, and offers you an unlimited budget to turn one book/series into a movie/TV show/Mini series.
What would you choose? Why?
Here's mine:
Legend - David Gemmel. In my opinion, one of the best books there is. Darker and grittier than your usual fantasy book, this is one of the finest books by one of the finest authors of recent times. R.I.P. David Gemmel.
Magician - Raymond E. Feist. This is one of THE defining fantasy novels. With all of the best fantasy Archetypes (Elves, Dwarves, Dark Elves) with a hint of something new (Valheru, Pantathians) and a very interesting universe, this book has so much promise.
So Dakka, what about you?

Romance of the Three Kingdoms would be my first choice. Probably as a long running series as its way to long for a single film.
Even single battles require two parts, ala Red Cliffs.
Other than that, Dragonlance Chronicles. I'd love to see that as a big budget movie trilogy. Sadly the reccent animated hack job looks so poor I can't even bring myself to watch it.

I would make The Dark Tower into a movie series, probaly combining the intro of The Drawing of the Three into the ending of the Gunslinger.
I'd make the comics and the other stories that form the backdrop into a mini series.

I read more fantasy than most, i own All of Feists, Gemmells, Robin Hobbs, George R are Martins, Terry "plagiarist" Brooks etc etc
But i have to say, Gemmell's would work the best, if only because it would be easiest to film. Feists earlier works are of course, fantastic, but i fear they would be extremely difficult to do, you know.. Valherru and Dragons and elves and dwarves. You need Peter Jackson budget to make them!
But legend? I bet you could film that for peanuts in comparrison. Grab Brian Blessed for Druss and use an auld castle in Britain and i could film it myself!

I belive that extreamly interesting films could be made from two books that I really enjoyed reading, not so much due to " jaw dropping writing",but due to great story telling.
The first would be Ronald Kelly's "Moon of the werewolf"..a story of a family of morticians who just happen to be werewolves, who set up shop in a small southern town.
this book, more so than any I've read ( with the exception of World war Z) just screams make a movie out of me.
The second would be Craig Spectors/John Skipps "splatterpunk" classic "The light at the end"...this is a very dark, gritty tale of the N.Y.P.Ds pursuit of a brutal serial killer, who turns out to be a vicious blood sucking fiend.
With the current trend towards "sparkley, angsty, sissypires","The light at the end" would be the perfect film to reclaim the vampire genre.

I would like to see a series of movies based on the stories of H. P. Lovecraft. Not the crap that has been made, where the locations, times and even most of the characters have been changed so that the story is nearly unreckognizeable, but faithful tellings of the stories, with perhaps the unfortunate racist references removed. With just a little extra narrative and extra exposition, I believe that these three stories would make an excellent trilogy.
#1: Whisperers in the Dark.
#2: Shadow over Innsmouth.
#3: The call of Cthulhu.
Of course, I would also like better movies of other stories of his, such as Herbert West: Reanimator, The colour out of space and Rats in the walls, but those are of lesser importance.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I agree for the most part, however there are some exceptions,The Wizard of OZ and One flew over the cuckoos nest would be good examples.

I was wondering about who I would get as the cast. Brian Blessed would make an awesome Druss, but who would I get to play Rek?

Bram Stoker's Dracula was also pretty good, The Wizard of OZ to this day remains as one of my most favorite movies.
