Ok so I just bought my three games day tickets as they went on sale today, and I figured I would just give a reminder to all interested to order them as they arent selling at the door, and I garuntee they will sell out fast.
|
Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

A Games Day... sold out?
It looks like the pressure sales learned from splash releases and the limited space hulk fiasco are showing their ugly heads.
"Buy it now because we arent selling tickets at the door! Going fast!"
Screw Games days. It was the worst $40 I ever spent on anything, and that includes drugs which are even worse for my health than a GD (though thats debatable).

That's $25 too much!!!
We don't even have Games Days in Australia because they realised they were pointless. We just buy the GD mini in stores.
And with the Iron Curtain of Jervis coming down on any an all news about upcoming releases, why bother going?

agreed JD really I am going to GD just to do demon, and maybe buy the forge world mini. Truth be told if it is anything like chicago was last year then this will undoubtably be my last one ever because that was just too depressing.

Hmm.
$28CDN for a ticket.
$528CDN for return airfare
$220CDN for hotel
$150CDN for food and taxi
-----------------------------------
$926
For $926 I get:
The option to buy "promotional" product at the venue.
Promotional Games Day Miniature. (Also available the day after Games Day on Ebay for a fraction of the cost to attend Games Day)
Previews extending into the next 3 months from one vendor. (Also available on the internet the day after Games Day for free).
The option to enter "Golden Demon" (along with the honour of having your model mistreated by staff offset by the benefit of winning nothing for 99.5% of the participants).
The chance to participate in "exicting" hobby events. (Limited sign in slots are included free of charge.)
I'm sorry, Games Day is too much "WIN" for my feeble mind to comprehend. I'll save my money to attend a "lesser event", such as SDCC...

Emp: There are a few things that draw me into GD.
1: The games - Allways get a good game there, and its nice to see some of the armies on the tables.
2: Golden - Amazing models, i would happily pay £50 to look at the line-up of the models.
3: FW - i can check its not broken / warped and has all the parts while im there

THAT is probably the best reason to go, actually...
Plus, it still gets you the miniature of the year 'free' too, right?
So, if you're planning on any FW purchases, and you live within a reasonable distance, not too bad, right?

No sadly you still have to pay for the forge world games day mini that year. I think you were believing it free alp, but not sure. I can understand with the neighbors to the north and even on the other side of the country for games day why they wouldnt go. Personally if I am not deployed in 2011(still up in the air) I was planning to go to italy as this could coincide with my late honeymoon (she and I bought a house instead). Truthfully though the lack of paying for shipping seeing golden demon, and all around atmosphere of GD was the fun for me. Sadly their isnt much in the ways of deals to be had anymore so this is one of the major negatives, but I am hoping in one last fleeting moment of faith that this one will actually make up for the past two years of well...junk.

The Forgeworld figure I can see attendees having to pay for, but isn't that ugly chaos sorceror model included with admission? If you have to pay for him too, that makes Games Day an even better deal!
I find it hillarious that the GW bean counters think that holding a one day event with the Forgeworld Shop, Golden Demon and some open gaming is sufficient to be the PREMIERE GAMES WORKSHOP EVENT of the year for North America. Most decent sized comic (and other nerd) conventions are usually 2-3 days, with multiple vendors and lots of events. With an offering as feeble as Games Day, I think you'd be hard pressed to get anyone outside a 3-4 hour drive to put in the effort. Any more than that and you'd be spending more time travelling than time at the event.

QFT.
I live about 2 hours from the event. Let's see:
$25 ticket
$15 dollars to park
$15 for lunch (Inner Harbor at Baltimore)
$15-20 for tolls
$20 for gas
Total: $85 + wear and tear on the car, to drive a total of 4 hours, wait in 2 hours worth of FW line (and they're out of everything but "trenchline corner 2"), 1 hour of Golden Demon line, get no good info, no sales, no bitz by the ounce (or bitz at all), no "new releases" for sale that aren't already preordered or released, and look at a cabinet of greens that are mostly test sculpts by new sculptors that will never be released.
Not a chance. GW will have to put a string of these together, with solid content, good info sessions, and really offer something for me to attend, before I even consider it. And I used to go every year just to browse.
Oh, and the tickets used to be $40 when the mini was free. Now its $25 to attend, and you have to buy the mini (probably in the $15-$20 range, after all, its limited edition! Until its not.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity...... |

Shame I can't make a "fart" sound on the internet...trust me, I'm doing it right now! from both ends!!
Sounds like the fact that I have never attended a GW GD in my life is actually money well saved! Although it seems the event has gone from bad to worse.....
To be honest, its quite sad really, as an event of this nature "could" be about the gamers and not the companies....however, thats the brick, its not about companies, its about a company!! and a pants one at that.
After all the GAk GW is pulling this year, and probably next, it will be interesting to see how their "flag ship" event actually turns out....

Pfft, you don't even get that, really. What was the only real "preview" we got from the last GD?
A Tyranid codex cover. Just the cover. No models, no rules, nothing but a boring and strangely colorful piece of artwork of a carnifex standing around. Everything else that was even remotely exciting was quickly snatched away whenever people started taking pictures.

Have got to say that UK's GD has been a bit of a let down for some time. This year me and my group trundled around for a few hours, met up with a few people, spoke to the designers...then left.
