Okay, heres my idea for using my Black Templars with the space wolves codex. I think I can make it fit their unit listing and still keep it to the fluff. Though I would opt not to use certin units mainly because, they do not fit the fluff of BT. What I would be using to represent the black templars in the codex is try to show the brotherhood of the templars through their squads and the adhoc fasion they go to battle. (templars fight in crusader squads in the much same way space wolves have packs, always fighting with the same brothers.) Not to mention using the sagas as quests for the templars. Anyone have any other thoughts on this? This is still in my head phase and hasnt been put on paper at all.

Umm I don't think you can use two different codexes for one single army....

You COULD just use the SM 'dex.

No I was just planning on using only the space wolves codex and represent the units with my black templar models.

I think what he is trying to say is, use black templar models, but using the codex for rules for them?

Am I right?

This is good.... isn't it?

I think that's a perfectly fine idea if you abide by certain restrictions: no long fangs (BTs don't use devestators) no rune priests (BTs hate psykers) no thunderwolves/fenrisian wolves (unlike SWs, BTs seem to understand that taking animals to futuristic war is a bad idea) and try to always use a wolf priest (as a chaplain obviously) and a wolf guard battle leader/lone wolf (to represent the emperor's champion).

Not trying to dictate those to you as rules, what I mean is you should stick to units that have a clear analogy in the templars codex. Because if I ran into someone using this 'counts-as' project, with grey hunter 'crusader squads' and normal vehicles, and some converted characters and wolfguard 'sword brethren', I'd be cool with it. If I ran into someone doing this, and it was obviously just an excuse to use the best special characters, psychic powers, or units like long fangs and thunderwolves that are held to be pretty powerful, and are totally inappropriate for BTs, I'd say he was just looking to upgrade to a more powerful army.

Bit of an essay there! Summary: do it, but make the conversions clear and consistent. Figure out what units have analogues in the BT background/codex, and stick to those - if you find yourself trying to justify a BT chaplain manifesting holy power eerily similar to Njal Stormcaller's abilities, you may want to scale things back a bit!

Good luck with the project, I think BTs have maybe the coolest models/image of any SM chapter, and it's a shame their codex wasn't simply updated to bring it in line with the new SM codex and to resolve some balance issues that arose from the 5th edition changes.

It depends more on whether your regular opponents are OK with it. One of my regular opponents switched from the Black Templar codex to the 5th ed. Space Marine codex when it came out and I've been OK with that. Some people however have accused him of power gaming, switching to to newer codex in an attempt to have an edge. Like I said, personally I'm OK with it but you may get some stick.

One question to ask is when does codex proxying stop; Necrons using the Eldar codex? Dark Angels using the Chaos Space Marine codex? Tyranids using the Ork codex?
OK, the Tyranids one was silly but think it over; if you would have a problem with someone else using a different codex for their army when one is already out then you have your answer.

Or you could just use the perfectly good templar codex maybe as it still even now just about holds up to the other codices.

Honestly it doesn't make too much sense for me. The units that you would be using have equivalents in the BT codex, so why would you use the SW codex. What units would you even use?

Ultimately it'll come down to what your friends say. I'd say go for it; a bunch of furries have already been using Codex: Khornate Legions to indulge their...thing anyways.

As you've noticed, you will run into a variety of opposition from the DCGM (and similar local groups) and those that feel a strange loyalty to fictional facist factions of plastic army men.
