After wanting a recent change from the usual BA colours i paint, i got interested in some work by Joe from the Eavy metal team.
He tends to paint allmost everything in a non metallic metal scheme, which looks amazing.

Anyways, me being as foolish as i am thought i would give it a go to see how it worked out ...... Without any ideas on how he did it ...... Or what lighting was used ...... Or anything really
Simply picked up a brush, and randomly started layering different shades of browns and off whites to see how it came out.

Nowhere near as good (afterall, he gets paid alot for a good reason) But i think its just about acceptable for my 1st try.
Also, since i couldnt be bothered to hunt down a basic marine i had the Lorenzo model from hulk near by, so he suffered the fate

C&C is really needed as its a style i want to try and get used to.
The results from it look great when done well (unlike mine)
So any pointers, tips, ideas, anything atall is welcome.

Now, i have only painted the armour and the leg gem up to now, so everything else is just basecoated
So try and ignore that lol.
I also apologise about the bad pics. The daylight bulb i had managed to die the other week, and i havent bothered getting a new one, so its basic ceiling light and 2 lamps im affraid.

I like it already, but I think the bits painted so far will look even better once the rest is done. It looks like... that style of semi-animation I can't remember the name of - the kind used in Through a Scanner Darkly?

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

It's a great first attempt! Well done!

The only thing I would say is that you should work on your belnding of the colours as they do look like separate colours. Although, as you move further away from the model, like when you're playing, you won't be looking at the model in such detail and it will look stunning on a table.

Must have a go at this myself....

Thanks fifty
Wanted to get the armour done 1st since i was just colour testing.

Thank you Inyoko
My blending does need some serious work lol (never actually had to do it often, let alone browns)
The main problem was that no matter how little white i mixed with it the colour seemed to change down quite a few tones each time.
Couldnt really get a happy medium change in it

Try it, ok, it takes alot of time
But i think its something well worth getting into, its not often you see the style used.

thanks again for the replies and ill get some more work done on it tonight / tomorrow.

I'll have to see how it looks when it's done but so far it looks pretty awesome! I think Lemartes would look excellent with the color scheme as well.

Is the armor you're going for a burnished gold color?

I think you're off to a great start on this, especially for a first effort!

That said, I think sometimes the transition from one shade of brown to the next looks a little bit too sharp (the legs/shins/calfs for example).

Once you finish up the model it will pull everythin together and make for a rather striking look though, and this is not a bad first attempt at all. Well done so far!

To be honest mate, i was just going for a general gold, didnt want to set a type until i get used to it

Caffran: I know lol, my blending needs some serious work.
Hopefully the rest of the model will tie it in, if not then i guess i need to re-paint it

Lorenzo: Good work, scouts. Now you can have your cats back.

Scout: Uh, sergeant Lorenzo? I had a Genestealer...

Lorenzo: Is cat now. I am Lorenzo!

*Runs out of the room*

But Simpsons references aside, I kind of like your layering, and look forward to seeing the completion of this.

Looks good but you need to wet blend the browns more so there's a gradient to the colour change rather than bands. Also, these websites might help, they did with my NMM.

Really solid on the first NNM attempts. Only advice is you want to use less of the highest contrast as this is more of a collabrative point for reflections to meet at. Do that and it will really sharpen it up for you.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

What you've done so far looks more of a comic book "cell-shaded" effect to me, but gets a big for both attempt and outcome.

Gordino: Thanks for the comments

Sirius: My blending needs some serious work, which is why i went for layering on this one.
If i had tried to blend it then it would possibly look like a chocolate sponge cake
Thanks for the links.

Emp: I do think i have gone a little over the top with it, i may try and tone certain parts down in a while, 1st though im going to test it on another models since i dont want to have to start again lol.

Reaper: Thank you very much
I believe "cell shaded" was what someone was trying to think of earlier.
I take it thats the style that the old marvel comics used?

r3n3g8: Thanks

Well holy crap that looks nice. My son saw it and said "wow that is GOLD!" So if he thinks its gold, instead of NMM that means you did a pretty good job
Im jealous too, Ive wanted to try NMM but Im a bit intimidated on the idea. Maybe with the Tau Im getting into? Why not make my first attempt even harder on myself with smaller minis lol

Thanks mate, and thank your son
Give it a shot, lets face it, whats the worsed that will happen?
Tau would look pretty decent in NMM.
Ive only done lorenzo in it since he will be a chapter master

Anyways, moving on to a tiny update.
Got the winged chalice on the chest plate finished, just went for the classical BA grey/white theme for it
Gave the sword a go, however, im not convinced and may have to do it, once ive sorted out a very very small problem.

Im out of skull white lol, never paid attention to how much i had left in there, allthough i knew it was getting low.
So i guess ill have to move on to the robes for now, and then go back to parts once i have more.

anyways, piccies:

VERY nicely done!

And again, as someone already mentioned, I think it will look even more spectacular once it is finished, with all of the 'other' colors on there as well...

My only advice would be to paint over your final white with a slightly more yellowed colour, and keep the pure white for centre reflections, like small dots on the neckpiece and boot tips. Having it used so liberally, especially on the lower tips of the shoulder pads where the light wouldn't reflect nearly that brightly, sort of lessen the impact on other parts of the model.

Blending comes with practice, have a go on something with a nice, large, smooth surface and just try for a straight gradient. I've been told dreadnaughts are good for this. (For the record, practicing on intricately folded capes edged in fur was not the smartest idea I have ever had. Don't do this.)

Gordino: Thanks.

Alpharius: Thanks mate, its all about if i get it finished though lol, got alot of stuff to be doing, but just taking a break for a bit before shooting over to troll forge.

Horst: Thanks.

Lord: Thanks again mate.

Morgrim: i have been thinking about going over alot of the white to reduce it more, but im going to get the model finished before i start to tweak areas of it.
Want an overall look before i decide what im changing.

Ive spent ages trying to get used to blending, but i just cant for some reason (which is odd since i allways used to have no problem with most blending)
I think im stuck with cell shading for now until i get back into it.
Thanks for the tips though mate.

Thanks iron
