Hi,
I have a simple collection of regular Space Marines that I obtained mostly from a starter set about 10 years ago. I have two squads of 10 marines, 2 seargents, a couple of models with heavy weapons, 2 landspeeders, a librarian, and a squad of terminators. I painted them with a Blood Angels-esque scheme way back, but do not want to continue in this direction.
I am working on another army currently, but could see myself starting to collect Chaos in the future.
I decided that I'm interested in the possibility of converting and repainting my current SM models as Chaos. I have tried searching the forums for other threads with advice, but have not turned up anything useful yet. I was hoping some folks could recommend the types of bits I'd need to do the conversion and suggest resources to obtain them, or offer some for sale or trade.
I'm curious if this is a common practice, how do folks work with the imperial eagle crest on models' chests, crux terminatus', etc. during the conversion process?
Any ideas, input, or examples would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! -Jamie

Depeneding on what legion of chaos you are in favor too... the spawn kit would work amazing for most conversions especially if it is to go towards nurgle... also if you do nurgle, greenstuffing bigger bloated stomach plats (some can be cracked with organs comming out!) that works as well.

There are plenty of spare bits on most of the Chaos sprues.
Buy a few and have a play around.

Everyone: No.

You can shave off the imperial wings reasonabley easily if the arms arn't on the model.

Also remember that the Alpha Legion some times pretend to be Imperial to infiltrate enemy worlds.

You can also buy chaos back packs from GW now and there are plenty of bits webstores that you can pick up icons & the like.

You could also buy 1 box of the chaos marines then mix & match.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

You could be lazy and just paint them in a chaos scheme. I did that but even lazier I just painted them red and free handed a khorne symbol.

This guy wrote Khorne's name on his armour in the mirror

People will question it though. But as a chaos player just shout Blood for the blood god and punch em in the face.

You could make them Red Corsairs or another chapter that has only recently fallen to chaos. Roughly score off or otherwise defile the imperial icons and then roughly freehand chaos marking over them. Not so sure about chaplains though, they tend to be the ones least likely to fall and most likely to get lynched by the rest of the chapter as it tumbles from grace...

Might make interesting sorcerer conversions, though.

don't forget CHaos bits packs from GW and random selection of BIts from bit swebsites can be useful in this situation

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.

Chaos Warrior bits from the fantasy line also look pretty fantastic for Chaos Marines. I've just rebuilt my old terminators using parts from Chaos Knights.

not exactly what you asked for, but I have an abundance of chaos and am looking to do the exact opposite.

If you are interested we can just swap some models.

Paint them up as recently converted renegade marines, like the Red Corsairs used to be. Basically, give them a variety of Loyalist paint schemes but defile or scrape off the Imperial iconography. Paint big red Xs over the chapter symbols, slap a Chaos symbol or two over them, etc.

This explains why they use Loyalist-looking armor and equipment, but are clearly not Emperor-lovers any more. Could make for a very characterful and visually interesting army of ragtag Chaos pirate marines.

Bear in mind that I'm a very casual player, and any advice I give will reflect that tendency.

If you're looking for cheap spiky bitz, I have found that the ends of toothpicks are amazing for that.

You can also use the central portion of the toothpick to make the back packs look more chaotic by cutting of the vents and gluing a small section of toothpick in between the pack and the vent.

That's kind of what I was planning on doing when I get my Chaos army going. I was actually thinking of painting them with some Chaos-ey customization, then roughly filing off the iconography and leaving it bare, maybe with a Chaos symbol messily applied in its place. It'll look sloppy with raw 'ceramite', but that's kind of the POINT.

I like the idea of toothpicks. Apparently cogs from broken printers make pretty good Chaos bitz, depending on what you're slapping them onto. There's also the ever-lovable Green Stuff, which you can use to make just about anything if you get creative.

Cool idea - Ive picked up some very ragged Space marines (glued and painted by a 4 year old), that I intend to chaos up.

Im planning to avoid spikes on these guys tho, and hitting them with excessive weathering and rust. I will be obscuring the acquilla with GS or hacking into it, so they look 'freshly converted to nurgle'.

Ive also been using Dark Angels Veterans as Alpha legion chosen, as the robes are cool. This involves shaving off the iconography and then sticking greenstuff scales all over them.

Very interested in seeing what you produce!
