Anybody else think it would be a good idea if GW posted all its codexes as PDF's.

these would be work in progress.

They could be posted with the direction in mind that the team 'intends' to go with

this way gamers can playtest, comment, rant, give feedback on anything

GW could garner player opinions

they could still keep back some things, so when the codex actually comes out its a surprise

so when GW decides what army to do next it has several months worth of opinions on the new concept

this would hopefully make the codex system quicker

There is no chance in hell they would ever open themselves up to that. To put it simply they are far more likely to get idiots having shouting matches than well reasoned input.

They wouldn't be able to manage the feedback.

I do think they should release all of the published codices in pdf format for free. They keep saying they're not a rules company, they're a miniatures company after all.

I'm okay with them gone. Someone would always conveniently swap from Blood Angels to Dark Angels, then straight over to Black Templars---oh wait no, he meant Black LEGION in the middle of a match.

If the codexes were more flexible, we'd be far better off though

Not really. The real problem was that, even with the sub-Codexes, there wasn't enough of a real difference to justify most of them.

Codex: Craftworld Eldar could easily have been rolled into Eldar, no problem. Same with the Codex: Assassins, Codex: Catachans, etc.

The only ones that realistically had any real differences were Dark/Blood Angels and Space Wolves...and even then, those were tiny things barely worth of the title Codex.

If they bring back the subdexes like Craftworld Eldar, I don't really see it ending well.

I would like to see, however, them to bring back some of the older and fun scenarios revamped. Stop the Ritual is a personal favorite from the DH book.

GW will never do that.
They do not understand how to increase interest in their game, and to increase sales. They only think of the short term gain.

For example, the cost of models has continued to increase over the past 20 years -- even though they cost of production has decreased since they moved to having all plastic models.
If GW dropped the cost of all their models by 1/2 to 2/3, sales would skyrocket and the ebay market would dry up for the most part. Their overall profits would increase.
Instead, they continue to jack the prices of the models.

They should release searchable PDF's of all their Codices via their website. Not for free - you'd still pay for them (about 2/3rds the cost of the hard copy version).

Other companies do this, and it works very well. Having electronic searchable versions of Codices would be exceptionally useful.

But they won't, because this internet thing is a fad.

Or an even better idea that Mongoose did for awhile:

Have a voucher/access code wrapped with each hardcopy that allows you to access the PDF for free, or the option to buy the PDF for the same price.

Win/win for GW right there.

This payment would happen how?

Once per codex or once per viewing the codex ?

Possibly because you're completely wrong, as well as ignoring the entire bigger picture. Just thought that might be useful for you to know.

If you are getting excited by the the thread thats a positive thing, so say that!

i did have another idea about having downloadable minidexes which would be alot cheaper but have no fluff or pics just rules
(people would nick them and put up on own sites probs)

anyways im not asking what GW will or wont do, im wondering if other gamers think its a good idea?

okay so rather than write what you think, there was a 'poll' about the major points of the codex so rating things 1-10 very bad -very good
(so mainly quantitative data rather than qualitative)

following this line of thought maybe you could digitally 'tag' units in different ways 'high points' 'over powered' 'few options'

opinions?

And... shouldn't that apply to his post too? I was hoping he might actually try and back his opinions up with well, anything, but if you're so eager to see him gutted right here, well I've got a few minutes. (that and in a post where everything the poster said was wrong, well, where to begin? Well, how about the top?)

Also, mouse, you don't seem to understand what a 'flame' much less a 'personal flame' is. Calling him 'a drooling grot with breath that could kill a grox' is a personal flame. 'You're completely wrong' is a statement of fact, even if a rather blunt one.

For example, the cost of models has continued to increase over the past 20 years -- even though they cost of production has decreased since they moved to having all plastic models.

Wrong. Plastic may be cheaper per figure in terms of sheer material cost, but the machinery and dies for plastic sprues are much more expensive than for metal casting (but better suited for mass production - hence why common kits are plastic, and rare models like characters remain metal - there's little chance they'll sell ever enough to make up for the cost to convert to plastic, and metal holds greater detail). So claims of 'cost of production' dropping significantly are iffy at best.

If GW dropped the cost of all their models by 1/2 to 2/3

The company would die. GW has these things called, 'employees' who take money in exchange for doing work. Money is obtained by selling things. What you don't seem to realize is that the production cost for model kits isn't the only thing its price tag covers. GW has to pay rent on its stores, utilities, materials, new equipment, et al from what it sells. It's like saying your game console discs should take a 2/3 cut to the price because DVDs are cheap.

sales would skyrocket

Maybe, but is what's holding most people back from buying right now is that they can't afford to buy the models, or that they don't have any inclination to buy 2k points worth of models right now? After the initial spike would everyone keep buying that much continuously? Would a 2/3 drop in price even cover the production costs? How about only 50%? Congratulations, GW is selling 200% what it was this time last year, but every kit that goes through the register costs them money.
and the ebay market would dry up for the most part.

That's an interesting assumption to make. Why? People will keep on using ebay to get deals they're not getting in the stores. Especially once the people who splurged at the price cut and then start reselling the kits they're never going to get around to, ebay prices will quickly drop to match the new, reduced prices. Which further depresses sales from GW, costing them even more.

Their overall profits would increase.

And here we have 'completely wrong, and ignoring the big picture' part. Profits would fall so fast it'd blow a hole in the floor.

Just so you know, it's a bit misleading.
