Hey guys, I just received my Fortress of Redemption last night, and I figured I would give a little mini-review of what it is, seing as how it is a splash release, and fairly pricey. I have pics too that I will upload tonight.

First off, it is big. The sprues weigh about as much as two baneblades. There is a lot of plastic, and the parts are very solid. Those parts are also fairly interchangable, with different decorative parts being able to be moved around. However, there do not seem to be any spare bits to speak of other than the search lights and heavy bolter emplacements.
The parts themselves are well cut and nicely detailed; no vacuum forming here. In all, it looks like it goes together one way, and one way only, with the only structural variation being the missile pit/laser emplacement, which are opposite sides of the same peice. Note, however, that you only get enough peices for one laser, so you could have two missile pits or a missile pit and laser, but not two lasers. Also, the missile pits are in the lower bunker parts, which is kind of wierd.
Speaking of wierd, you geta cover for said missile pits that is reversable with either a DA sword and wings icon or a generic Aquilla. However, right above the main door there is a fixed DA emblem. As far as I can see, that is the only set DA iconography, and can probably be cut off and replaced as you see fit. The sword bearing angel things on the sides of the tower are also fixed, the back of the panel being a rough negative of the front, but are not really DA specific, with more of an Angel of Death feel. I haven't put it together yet, but I am confident that slicing off the DA door emblem and replacing it wit an =][= icon will make for a perfectly fine Inquisitorial Stronghold, with none of the angsty Native American Monk Guys stuff.

Another thing of note is that it does not appear to be compatible with any of the other building kits. I think you might be able to mix the base of the tower with normal COD building parts, but I am less than optimistic as the width looks a little off. When I finish cutting it off the sprue tonight I will see. I am about 95% certain it does not mix with the planet strike bastions at all, but I will check that as well.It would be really nice if it did :(

So, I hope that helps, and pics should be forthcoming tonight!

Question:

what is the dimensions of the area that the big tower sits on?

Is it like 5"x5" square or what?

I'm curious to see how a tower from bastion components or even a tower made from four of the Aquila panels from the recent shrine of the Aquila would match up...

My FLGS got one and and one of the emps are putting it together for the terrain stock.

Looks pretty bad ass though in the flesh (or plastic in this case). You can make it not so DA by not putting on the DA emblems on the lower walls. The giant reaper however is not removable unless you green stuff the entire face (times 4) which would ruin it in my opinion.

In short, its pretty awesome and I want one.

If I give you a cookie, will you go away? If I give you the bag, will you go far, far away?

it looks like you could make a whole little bunker out of the parts that make the walls of the missile silo and stuff, it would just need some modification to finish the roof...

possible?

Put mind together yesterday, and it's awesome. The design of parts on sprues is incredibly efficient, with seven sprues it takes to make the thing only having three unit ones. Construction was solid and easy, assuming you can read instructions better than me, which is probably a given.

I'm tempted to get a second one and build it as three difference pieces, a tower and two separate bunkers. You'd be missing one wall section of one of the bunkers that you'd have to fill in with something, but the extra stuff from the walk way you wouldn't be using should make that easy.

Good idea !!
I've been wondering about the convertability of it myself.

Sadly, I won't be getting mine soon ... my FLGS seems to have missed the ordering boat (yet again) !!

It's not a splash release. It is a permanent part of the range. It might eventually go Direct Only, but it's not going anywhere soon. This isn't this month's 'Space Hulk'.

Wehrkind wrote:no vacuum forming here.

Why would anyone think for even a second that this was going to be the case? Even before we saw the sprues a while back, this is obviously a big multi-piece kit?

That's a shame. Well, on the bright side, it means I won't buy any more than the one I have already.

HMBC: According to the Warstore site, it is a splash release, though that might just be in the brick and mortar sense, and it will still be available by direct order from GW.
The vacuum forming was in reference to the fact the detail is crisp and clean. I could have easily said "no second rate sculpting and casting here" but I figured the previous debacle involving pretty pictures in ads but crappy product in stores would get the point across too.

And according to GW Customer Service at US HQ it is a splash release. Of course, the definition is open to interpretation, but they are calling it a splash release. When I inquired about it, they said it would be here for a while then gone till re-release next year at this time. Quantities allocated to independent sellers were limited due to it being a "splash", hence the lesser than usual discount at The War Store as they had to go through third party distributors to up the quantities they had available to sell.

I got mine delivered on Friday and had major construction finished by Sunday afternoon. It is a huge and terrific looking model.

Can it be assembled without the tower, or would that require some conversion to cover a huge gaping hole?

You definitely want something in the spot where the tower sits. However, it's probably best to leave the tower, two bastion areas, and connecting bunker with walkway on top separate for ease of storage, transport and removal from the game table due to each piece being "destroyed" separately in games.

Well I know that my local GW store is only getting 4. And those are to sell, there aren't enough at the moment to be given to stores for store terrain.

Still, it'll be Direct Only after the initial release.

Ahh.. a quick question good lords/ladies.

Can you combind 2 of the said kits to make a larger fortress? or are you stuck with only the set 1 without a PhD in plastic modeling?

If you think about it, putting the laser turret on the LOWEST part of the building is kinda dumb. However, while the upper part of the tower holds 6 models (not 10, tried) it ALSO can seat the laser turret, and then you could have 2 missile silos. In this configuration, you could have 3 objectives all in one terrain piece, as the 2 missile silos would be 14 inches apart, and the laser turret on the tower is also more than 12 inches from both the misile silos.

Totally off topic, but the tower plus its square base are all hollow, and can easily house a vodka bottle, for those tough sunday mega battles

When I first saw the bastion i liked it a bit but then it started growing on me, when I noticed the ton of possibilities with the modularity I bought some and will get more.
The fortress its the oposite, first time I saw it i was like super pumped up, loving the design etc, although the more i look at it the less i like it... and since its not modular or compatible I think Its out of my shopping list.

I think I'll build a replacement tower somehow, maybe out of Necromunda bulkheads, and use the original tower for my urban terrain board.

I checked out a friend's last Saturday. The weapons are modular, so you can put the quad auto cannon on it or the laser cannon from the Bastion on it, as well as any of the Rhino based vehicle turrets and Land Raider turrets or you can put that big twin-linked laser on a bastion or make it an emplacement..I like the Bolt-on Heavy Bolters that come with it, it would be cool to attach some to a regular Bastion or a vehicle.

Based on the dimensions of the spot the DA tower sits on a double or triple high tower made from the bastions (minus the base which is too big) might look snazzy, or my other thought as I mentioned is to get four of the Aquila panels from he shrine kit and make a tower from them...

I may magnetize the section so i can do both and swap them as desired...

It's not really modular at all, so barring that form of degree of plastic modeling you're pretty much going to have just a single sized building.

What you Could do with limited modeling is break the thing down into a tower and two separate bunkers. You'd just need a door or ladder for one bunker, and something to fill a single missing wall section on the other.
