A friend of mine uses a squad of Wraiths attached to a Necron Destroyer Lord with a Warscythe and a Res. Orb.
Their low invulnerable saves + the ability to pull them through a monolith portal makes them nigh unkillable.
I usually just ignore them but he usually reserves all his troops so there's not much to attack otherwise.
Anyways I was just wondering if this tactic was legal and if anyone had any strategies to counter it. Maybe mass fire? i.e. Heavy Bolters?

What there's like.......... 3-4 Wraiths in one squad max right?
No re-roll to inv saves.
They don't do as well as Seer councils in combat.
Don't wreck tanks as well as seer councils.
Don't provide any Leadership boosts.

No...they are far from a seer council... at the very least they take a up 2 FoCs instead of just 1.

What to counter it with?
Some random bolters are fine enough...hvy botlers prob. ideal.
It takes 36 bolter shots to cause 4 wounds on the squad, whil it only takes 18 hvy bolter shots.

WBB is only allowed if they have other necrons still up and not wiped out completely... in addition the WBB second roll is only useful if they 'make' it past that shooting phase.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Its legal, and its easy to kill. Wraiths are T4, so mass fire will usually down em. if all 3 wraiths get knocked over, they get removed from the game. Its pretty easy really.

the destroyer lord, tho, is much harder to kill. T6, 4+ invun, and it will get back up usually is pretty hard to deal with.

So just burst em down.

Wraith are a "looks better on paper" thing most of the time, as their shear unit size nerfs them. Now if they came in units of 10... I'd run home crying.

It might be that the necron player is using 3 squads of three making it much more survivable. That can be a little nasty as even if a squad of 3 is wiped there will be one within 6 inches (generally)

Dont forget, majority toughness means that the lord is T4 while there is more than 1 wraith in the squad with him. You should tell him to use a Tomb Spyder with 2 scarabs swarms attached and a Destroyer Lord, 11 T6 Wounds.

I play: - 2000pt
Deathwing - 12-1500 pts and counting

It looks lik a reat idea till you look at the price tag.
Wraiths in large numbers with a destroyer lord is just too expensive for what it does.

Depends on opponet and situatiom. For a tournie? prolly not. Against an opponent with 6 Russes it's not terrible

I used them twice. Once they were amazing and the other time they failed epically. The big thing is that they are great against super elite unites like terminators. Their 3+ inv along with a bunch of attacks and 4+wbb makes them as survivable as terminators and with 2-3 squads they can run around and kill them. What they dont like is 3 squads of marines with bolters, especially with a librarian around (they dont have a normal save...)

It's mostly the fact that he gets double wbb from a monolith portal (which takes them out of combat) and then they assault again.
I'm not positive on the legality of this...

Aye but they do have a 3+ armour and inv! http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1180146_Necrons_FAQ_2004-08_5th_Edition.pdf

I also noticed that wraiths are classified as infantry in the FAQ. Does this mean they can't join a destroyer lord and form a unit?

You guys realize it's just 9 meqs...depending on points, that shouldn't be hard to down...
Other than the lord attached, they don't ignore saves...

/shrug... this is not something I'm afraid of...but I'm sure there is some niche where they would do well, but not against anything with a competitive edge IMO.

Part 1 totally legal, great tactic and why they work so well, still die to torrent of fire, and if you kill one from multiple squads only one squad can be pulled at a time (not sure if they can assault, maybe if the monolith didnt move...)

Part2 They do! Wow shows how much i know. Still my answer to them is boltgun shots, 30 charging orcs, with the nob who wacks the destroyer lord or some other torrent of fire.
