Hello, starting up WH40K again after a long intermission... I used to collect SM during 3rd edition.

I'm interested in getting back into the hobby and am looking to start building up an Ork army eventually for tournament play or something.
I want to start with my goal being a 1k point army but I'm not sure how to go about it. I have decided I want to go for either a shooty army or a slugga/choppa army

Any tips on where to start?

Assault on Black Reach (the 40k starter set) is a good, cheap start to an Ork army. If you split it with a friend you get 20 boyz, 5 nobz, a warboss and 3 deffkoptas for $30 or so. Start with this and see where it goes. After painting this stuff, I advise getting a box of 5 nobz to kit out with power klaws, and a box of boyz to round out the sluggas to 30. You'd have a legal, fieldable army around 500 points right here. After that, I would suggest getting 3 more boxes of boyz to get a big 30 Ork shoota boy squad. With a solid core of 30 shootas, 30 sluggas, 10 nobz and a warboss (deffkoptas too, if you want em) you'll be well on your way to a strong and fun army.

So for the Shoota Boyz squads, can you give the Nob of each one a Big Shoota? Or are they supposed to have a PK and just help out in CC?

Pk, shoota boyz are supposed to still get into assault, they should be aiming for it, but they sacrafice one attack to get some bump is shooting.

Only take shoota mobs unless its 20+ boyz.

AOBR is a good start.

If you go foot sloggin, don't foget the Big mek KFF, it's a must have for all murderous fungi.

Would he be an HQ choice to replace the War Boss?

Also can anyone help me with just a basic 1000 point list for a Shooty army?

He takes up one slot, you can still have one warboss, but he is soooooooo worth it.

Are you allowed to give a warboss that metal jaw to improve his aesthetics purely?

I think that it's a bitz normally reserved for 'ard boyz but I like the effect it has on the warboss.

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

My advice:

Buy an Assault on Black Reach (AoBR) box for $60.

Find someone at your local FLGS who also bought one.

Trade your space marines for their orks, and now you have 2 AoRB boxes worth of orks. A little bit of customization to the 10 nobs to give them funky wound allocation to make them a super unit, and you've got the bonafide beginnings of an army.

The jaw thing is an iron gob. It CAN be used as a bosspole, but that can get a little confusing. Mostly its just to make them look cooler, or yes for Ard Boyz.
A bigmek is a HQ choice, but really, youll want one. I wouldnt personally replace a warboss with one, but the KFF they can take is just pure awesome. Weather you play a horde Ork or a mek Ork army, the cover saves it gives are invaluable. Troops get a 5+ cover save. Meaning that anything that shoots at them, you roll a D6 and on a 5+ the shot is useless. And on vehicles you get a 4+ cover save, so half the shots go bye bye.

As far as shooting Ork lists, Im not too sure. There are plenty of Ork players on here that can give you some really awesome shooty builds. I play pure slugga/choppa boyz in trukks. Im all about the assault lol.
But I have seen people put a bunch of lootas into battlewagons and just poor out the bullets in the safety of a battlewagon.
Good luck man, and welcome to the green tide

Ah thanks for that. I think I will go with Dash's suggestion then and just start out with a foot slogging army.

I have been looking at some more stuff (notably the tactica articles here at Dakka) and I think I will also try and convert myself a war boss biker unit.

Quick question, can the black reach Orks be made into Shoota Boyz?
Or do the sprues only include choppa + slugga?

I think I am confused about what "Boyz" are versus "Slugga Boyz" and "Shoota Boyz"

Boyz is how to refer to all orks. Shoota Boyz are Boyz with shootas (machine guns essentially), and Slugga Boyz are da Boyz with Choppas (Axes, swords, wood plank with nail, etc) and Sluggas (Pistols).

Got it. Thanks for the clarification haha.

And to answer your question I seem to remember them coming with just choppas/sluggas and a couple big shootas...... but then again I could be wrong. I bought mine when they first came out and I wanted to make them assault based anyways. I know I have a couple sprues with shootas on them....but those are probably from the regular boyz boxes Ive bought.

The Boyz in the AoBR box (with the exception of 2 Big Shootaz) are all Slugga Boyz, they aren't multi part minis,as you would get in a "boyz" box,but are 3 part "fixed design" minis.

I should however add that with a bit of conversion skill AoBR boyz can basicly become what ever sort of boy you like,I used a bunch to make tankbustahz and to make some burna boyz.

Time to brush off the exacto knife eh?
I think I will practice on turning Sluggaz into Shootas and then when I feel comfortable I will begin attempting to do my Warboss biker conversion (from a deff kopter)

Good luck with your future conversions man.
I should also add that you wll probly want to pick up a few "boyz" boxes.Nobz boxes and also loota boxes, these will give you enough boyz and bitz to keep you happily kit bashing for a while.
Throw all that in with a few sets of AoBR orkz and you've got a conversion wonderland.
