I'm looking to add in a greater summoned daemon to my chaos marine (khorne based) army but the current bloodthirster model is just too ugly for my tastes. While the forgeworld model is sweet, it's a tad too expensive for my wallet. I was looking at the plastic Balrog from the LoTR line but since I don't play LoTR I wasn't too sure on the size comparison of the two models. Would the Balrog model fit in nicely with the 40k models or does it look out of proportion. Are there any other models out there that would fit the theme as well?

Thanks!

Well, if your looking for an alternate model, outside of the games workshop range, and dont mind spending about $80 US, try the Greater WarDemon from UltraForge Its going to be bigger then the metal GW Bloodthruster, thats for sure.

Oh stop complaining, its for the greater good... Now get in the box!

Agreed. Its about $35 more? And its of the same quality of the FW one (imo) and is WAY cheaper... its really big too and works really well... Youd have to get your own base though since I think it only comes with a sqaure base but Im not positive...

Balrog. It's just an awesome fig, a bit bigger, but I think the current Greater Daemons are kind of weedy anyways.

Wow, some good alternatives there! The Hersey model actually captures the whole mindless, raging, killing machine look that I was thinking about. Thanks for all the input!

If you want to stay GW tourney-legal, go with the Balrog (adapted like that one there, if you can- that's one's badass!). It's actually a great model, too.

If you don't care about GW stuff, Ultraforge is a great company and support for working artists like them means we'll see more new sculpts. Go Ultraforge!

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Otherwise, you can do some nice work to Be'lakor from the Fantasy range - a few conversions, maybe an axe, and damn, he makes a sweet model. And if you want to paint him in the neutral black scheme he has, its the perfect undivided GD

Can you use a balrog conversion in gw sanctionned events and GW stores or doesn't it go against their license for LOTR?

I bought one of these and converted it so it has a chestplate and some other Khornate bits. I haven't gotten around to sculpting the hand I cut off, but other than that it's pretty much done. It's a pretty good model, though the casting on mine was done kind of poorly. I can take pictures if anyone is interested.

That's a fine looking daemon, wings are too small but that's easily remedied.

...it also has boobs.

Which is why I cut them off and gave it a chestplate so it's more manly because really... what self-respecting Bloodthirster has massive breasticles?

I'll take a picture of it later on. It's actually pretty decent.

I am now picturing a bloodthirster wheezing and getting squeezed into his armour by lots of panicking bloodletters and telling them how he once tried out for the SkullThrone Raiders, back in the day...

hehe ^^ the standard bloodthirster actually isnt that bad. im sure its been said before, but replacing the head does wonders. ohh i cant remember where i saw it, but someone had given their one a bit more of a dynamic pose, and then gave it one of the old warhammer fantasy orc boar heads (the one with the metal helmet thing?), gave it some of the hair, and well, it looked amazing. But i gotta say ultraforge has some excellent miniatures if your willing to pay extra money.

Speaking of alternate heads on a standard BT, if you have any of the old OOP heads from the original smaller Bloodthirster, they actually swap pretty well with the new BT with a litte bit of greenstuff, and give him a more refined, old school look.

The Golden Demon rules explicitly state that you cannot combine warhammer and LotR parts or your entry will be disqualified. I imagine that their tournaments would be the same. I've never had such issues in a GW store, though.

As long as they can't tell that its a mix then it doesn't matter. And most will not push it because most don't that part of the New Line agrement with GW.

IRRC wasnt it only changing the LoTR models? You can still use their parts for other things you just can modify the LoTR models with WH or the like, parts... I could be wrong but thats what I remember.
