Well, I am making a new Gaurd army and I wanted to feature them in Trench-coats because I like the look of it. I will be experimenting with Greenstuff on a couple of Catachans, though I have no Idea how to go about this. Also, this is going to be a Tank supporting regiment, sorta like the German Grenadiers fielded in WW 2, so I want an army that looks like its used to being around vehicles, how would you go about this?

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

The only downside with Pig Iron is the Pewter part, which means they'll be difficult to convert/reposition

There used to be a good GS tutorial around here somewhere, or possibly over at The Waaagh (i think the guy was making kommisorks and posted a tut), a little search-fu may re-surface these, or maybe they are lost to the annals of time lol

failing that i'd probably recommend kreig if your willing to pay the effort/money

I'll second this, I'm getting the Kolony Militia Booster pack in the mail soon, so I might keep you posted to see how they come out. However I have heard that they are of a higher quality (if not flawless) compared to GW's metal models.

I have been doing a lot of flowing robes for my chaos warriors for WFB. Click here and scroll down a bit to see what I am talking about. Here is essentially how I do them...

1. Put a wad of putty between the legs that is slightly less long than the bottom of the cloth will be. This doesn't go past the edges of the legs at all, so it looks like their legs are joined by putty. Let this set. This is what is called underpinning. It will give you a solid area to build more putty on top of.

2. wrap all around the legs and underpinning with a layer of fresh putty. This should be a cone shape that ends at the miniatures waste. At this point it should look like they have a cloth wrapped around their waste like a sarong.

3. Smooth this surface with your sculpting tool, or finger. Use a tiny amount of Vaseline (just a slight film) to keep your sculpting tool from sticking.

4. Before this putty sets (from step 2), press in the folds of the cloth. This part will take practice. I suggest you look at the coats that the psykers wear as a bit of a guide. A deep divot should be in the front that represents where the two edges of the coat meet.

5. Refine the edges, and bottom of the coat to get nice sharp edges. As the putty sets up, this will be easier. Let this set once you are happy with your detail.

6. Add buttons with a tiny bits of putty, shaped with a piece of brass tubing that is the appropriate diameter. You may want to wash the model a little to get any excess Vaseline off, or the new putty won't stick to it. This is the reason you want to be careful how much putty you use. The buttons may be hard to get a hang of at first. Don't be afraid to scrape ones you don't like off and start over.

- The collar of German long-coats would be hidden under the flak armor of the model if you are using Cadiens as your base model. This will make the model look a bit like the Cadien officer model.

- I hope this helps. Feel free to PM me any questions that you have.

While not exactly trenchcoats, take a look at Brother Argos' Plastic Steel Legion models. He does a nice "tutorial" on how he went about sculpting the various parts.

If you're going to use catachans or other models as a base, I'd suggest using a hobby knife to cut off all the pouches, detail, and other parts that will be covered by the green stuff. Otherwise, it looks chunky, which I'm sure isn't the look you're going for.
