People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I'm also sure the Chief of Staff for the First Lady enjoys being referred to as a "servant."

But yeah, I'm never voting for Michelle Obama.

If we're going to base our election decisions on trivial crap like this, shouldn't we make sure we're focussing on trivial crap that's actually true?

Given the general quality of blog posts aimed at attacking peripheral figures like First Ladies, did you consider checking to see if this was true before posting it, Relapse? Because it isn't true, it's a load of garbage. A thirty second search of snopes will tell you that the number of staff working for the First Lady is not unprecedented, that Laura Bush had between 24 to 26 staff, that Mrs Johnson and Mrs Ford had around 30 each, and Mrs Kennedy had around 40 staff while she renovated the White House.

Seriously dude, when you read gutter press political attacks, check if it's true. It rarely is.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

The First Lady have always (in these modern times) had these large staffs. You know how many phone calls and appointments people try to get with the her? Add in having to work it all into a political schedule and it is a mad house. If you think that is a lot of people, you should see how many 'servants' the President gets. It'll blow your mind.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

It's like the outrage over Palin spending $175k on clothes. Both sides run image heavy, billion dollar campaigns, $175k is not that much money in that context.

There was a story there about Palin's team acting outside of the budget constraints of the McCain team, that was a reflection of the issues between the two camps, but most people seemed to ignore that entirely and focus on how shocking it was that a lot of money was spent on clothes.

No its just that she and her husband advocate spending money on the poor and less for them. Yet its just look at the salaries. Dont you think she could do without that to help build a soup kitchen?

First off, meet the apostrophe. It's helpful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophe Also, exactly what the hell kind of sentence is "Yet its just look at the salaries."? I'm guessing the "its" was added by mistake.

Secondly, there is actually an interesting argument to be made about the extent to which staff for governmental figures is helpful in allowing them to more efficiently use their time, and to what extent they are simply wasteful.

The first lady serves, without pay, in an unofficial yet high profile way on behalf of the white house and the country. While firing some of her staff would free up governmental money that could, in theory, be used for some social good, it's not like the First Lady can simply fire people and immediately spend their salaries on a pet project. The money is allocated by congress to be used for one purpose, and to change that would require an act of congress.

The argument that would be made is that by limiting her staff, you limit her ability travel, communicate, and generally work to spread her message, so that while she might be able to fund, say, a single soup kitchen by eliminating her staff, she might be unable to raise awareness or support for many other issues that are much bigger ticket.

Strawman. Obama's entire campaign was built on being "Not Bush".

While most of the time a sloppy post CAN be understood, the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling is generally seen as respectable and desirable on most forums. It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

Possibly, but there has to be some limit, right? It's not like Obama pledged to become Bizarro Bush, where he's the exact opposite at all times.
