I've played war games for a few years now and I'm interested in trying out fantasy. One of my inspirations for an army has been Bernard Cornwell's "The Warlord Chronicles" which deals with Arthurian legend around 500 CE. Military formations during that era typically consisted of shield walls of spearmen and cavalry charges, primarily on the former. Leaders would fight (if at all) within one of these formations at the center as to better control the tide of battle. Archers could be used but were rarely seen in-mass on the battlefield.

So that is a basic idea of how I would like to play the question is, would this be a competent army list or would I be handy-capping myself by not taking some of the more...interesting choices availible? I'm also having a bit of trouble deciding whether The Empire or Bretonnia would be better suited for this type of army. Thanks.

I ponder the same question just a little while ago. Empire seems to be the best fit for a historical type army. The option for quality swordsmen, spearmen, archers and free company (as a catch all) should cover most historical infantry units.

Its the cavalry that causes the problems. The Empire heavy cav is depicted in heavy plate and barding - the historical cav would be in some sort of mail without any armor on the horse. Also, Empire has no option for light cav with bows although Dogs of War might provide a solution.

I can't see Bretonnia being a good option at all. The foot are so terrible, I don't see them as any sort of match to the historical shield wall.
