Hello everyone who happens to stumble upon and then decides to read this post! My name is V3STR1_N3X (or Tony) and I just recently joined this site, and also just recently decided to get into 40K. What finally made me decide to take the plunge was, first, the Dawn of War series (for the PC) and then, second, actually playing some Space Hulk (which I know is not too much like 40K, but fun), eventually led me into getting into this great hobby. Now I have searched and searched but I just can't really find a good starting point for building my Ork army... I don't know the rules yet as good as I should (I do have the newest Ork Codex and the 5th edition rulebook is on the way) and before I go buy 1750 points worth of miniatures to build, paint and game with, I was hoping someone here would kindly give me some direction. I know that I would like to make my army competitive (in it to win it, my friends) and I do want it to be the standard tournament size, which I believe is 1750, and of course, it must be Orks! I think Speed Freeks or Cult of Speed (not sure if there is a difference between the two) is the direction I wanna take my army but most the stuff I find on particular subject deals with 4th Edition rules and not 5th. So I was really hoping I could extract some help from someone who wouldn't mind taking me under their wing. I do hope I did post this topic in the write forum, and I do apologize in advance if I didn't. Please feel free to private message me or reply to this post, I would really appreciate all the help I could get. Hope to hear from somebody in the know soon! Take care!

As I am a Speed Freek in RL (lol, no joke...) I can help you.
You can take a gander at my thread a bit down on the first page called "Waaagh! Wazgakka The Tau Eradicators" to see a nice Speed-freek esque army using the special rule from taking wazdakka so warbiker mobs can be troops.
You can take that route (which I prefer) or you can get lots of trukks, with 12 boyz inside with a nob w/ pk and bosspole, they go zoom zoom and are ded killy.
You won't understand alot of what we are talking about unless you've read the rulebook a few times, but don't buy any minis unless you already have a your mind set and done on a army and an army list. This is imperative so you don't waste money.
For your anti-tank, orks rely almost solely on deffkoptas with rokkit-launchas and buzzsaws, or rokkit buggies, which both come from the fast attack slot, aswell as Power-klaws which ALL your boyz mobs nob should be equiped with.
Orks are a good army to start with because they can practically do anything, shooty horde of death, fast assaulty type, large hordes of assaulting, mechanized, elite, mega-elite, etc.

You've picked a theme (Kult of Speed) which is always a good start, now stick with it! don't be tempted to water down your list with 'good stuff' from here and there. Surf around and look at KoS lists (heaps on here), and pick one that feels right for you.

Here is an army list that I havent used but would be a good starter.
HQ:
KFF Mech
KFF Mech
Troops:
11x Slugga Boyz
1x Nob w/ PK
Trukk
-Red Paint
11x Slugga Boyz
1x Nob w/ PK
Trukk
-Red Paint
11x Slugga Boyz

Trukk
-Red Paint
11x Slugga Boyz
1x Nob w/ PK
Trukk
-Red Paint
Elites:
6x Mega Armored Nobz
Battlewagon (dedicated transport)
-Deff Rolla, Red Paint
6x Mega Armored Nobz
Battlewagon (dedicated transport)
-Deff Rolla, Red Paint
Total: 1468
Add Ons for higher points:
-More MANZ in the Battlewagons (up to 10)
-Deff Koptas for quick tank hunting
-Another Battlewagon with a full squad of 20 Boyz
OR
-Another Battlewagon with more Mega Nobz
Run 2x Trukks and 1x Battlewagon together. Put the KFF Mech in the Battlewagon. Be sure to run them in a block so each xport gets the 4+ cover save from the KFF Mech. Run both blocks of transports straight up the board and crash into your opponent and watch him cry.
Formation:
Battlewagon Battlewagon
Trukk Trukk
Trukk Trukk
The Meganobz will really help with munching down tanks. Some people hate the MANZ but they have kicked so much ass for me every game. I hope this helps man. Orks are awesome. Have fun
-Bad Sheep
Automatically Appended Next Post: The formation didnt get posted right. Put the other two trukks and battlewagon on the other side of the table. Thats how i would run it. Other people run everything together as one unit. Its all in what you like.

Wow, I am stunned and amazed by all the advice I received on my Ork army in such a short period of time. Looks like I have some more reading and research ahead of me! Right now I am unsure as whether or not to focus on making a Warbike heavy army or a Truck heavy army... and I also have a soft spot for the Stormboyz, but am unsure if they have a decent role within a KoS Ork army. More advice/explanations are definitely welcome and again thanks for the advice posted already. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside... maybe I should see a doctor...

On the subject of Stormboyz, they can be vicious if you deepstrike them, especially with Zagstruk, but they are only boyz with rokkit packs.
Generally, having them jump around the board gets them killed before they even get into CC.
Taking a mob of stormboyz is a similar decision as to taking Snikrot with 14 kommandos & two burnas. They are for tieing up the army first, and doing lots of damage second. They allow your trukks/bikes/whatever to get into assault without getting shot up.

ok, i know a little about KoS armies. The first thing you need to sort out is which type of KoS are you after, Heavy Trukk or Heavy Bikers. The main thing about orks is that they are possibly the greatest army to use in all of 40k for the reason of specialization, They can be uber Shooty, Cover the entire field with boyz, can rush your lines with trukks and be assaulting on the 2nd turn. Orks are not Space Marines ( or thier dark equivilant) in that they die redicously easy (6+ save aint stoppin nothin) so you cant be general, you have to be focused on one thing and nothing else.
Now, i personally find that Heavy Trukk lists, like Bad Sheep's, are much more effective than Biker lists, competitive wise. Biker list, on the other hand, is much more of a themed army that can dole out pain. The only successful way to Biker is with Wazdakka (i'm stating the obvious again).
Stormboyz, and the decison to incorporate them, is all based on what you want to achieve. I like the models alot and I have a squad with Zagstruk, but thier effectiveness has yet been seen on the battlefield. They are, like Karon said, only boyz with 12" move. I use them for tying up heavy weapon teams and crippling tanks, basically tying up their fire power so that my hordes are annihilated. If you want to be victorius, focus on your main theme and don't deviate, if you want to have a more laid-back approach, take them by all means, they give a very comedic and unpredictable side to the battle.
My friend runs a Heavy Trukk list that is incredibly mobile and very, VERY effective against my Tau. I do not have an example list for youu but i hope that my opinion has helped.

Orks are the way to go, if and only if you want to spent hours upon hours of painting......make sure you buy a hammer, because your going to hate bring all those models on the board. Death to the Orks, but they still a strong build. If you want another type of army, go Space Wolves, the Thunder Cavalry w/stormshields are great way to go. Plus you may want to wait intll Jan, because the new Niz Codex is coming out. My best answer is to read all the codexes all there before you go into an army. Good Luck

Stormboyz have an excellent place in any speed freaks list. In about 80% of my games, they have proved a big success, particularly at low-pts levels. People underestimate just how nippy they are, when assaulting, they have 12"+ D6"+6". When just running, they have 12"+2d6" (rokkit packs, run). They are a great shock unit, and whilst they can't beat a tactical squad, they are great for dealing with expensive, fast units that orks normally have trouble with (Eldar warp spiders, jetbikes, battlesuits ect.) Finally, they are not transport-reliant, and are fast and brave till the very end (bosspole). The number of times the nob has survived on his own, flown in and popped a tank never ceases to amuse me. To top it all off, they have great models! What's not to love?
Tactics-wise, 15-20 strong, Nob w/ p.k, bosspole, NEVER Zagstruk, don't deepstrike, they are nippy enough on foot, and a great distraction without risks. All in all, very useful, especially in conjunction with deffkoptas.

Seriously... I can't stress enough how happy I am with all the replies I have received in this topic to help me shape my Ork KoS army! I am so glad I joined this site and everyone here so far seems very nice and willing to help a new person into the hobby. Again, thanks so much for all the advice! More advice is welcome though I do think I am getting a good idea of what route I may go. I definitely have more reading ahead for me, of course. When I do make my army list, before purchasing them, I will be sure to post it here for feedback, and I do have thick skin (being a crew chief on the line will do that to you) so if I messed something up, be sure to tell me! Again thanks so very much!

KoS speed list is one of most popular and mine too . My opinion is to get some battleforces + get 3 koptatz from AOBR somewhere. You want your list to be based around:
A) on trukks with boyz with KFF mek giving them cover with deffkoptaz as anti tank support and disctraction and turn 1 assault.
B) Loads of bikes with wazdakka and some koptaz (yes again)
C) Loads of nob bikerz with warbosses + some trukks and/or koptaz
D) Mix with armoured brigade so some trukks (around three) and about 2 battlewagons full of orks + some koptaz and/or bikez as support.
Kult of speed used models review (my opinion):
HQ: Warboss: Take him if you want close combat monster and are not much worried about your vehicles (running some wagons etc.)
Mek with KFF: Take him in list where there is loads of trukks. Keep him cheap.
Wazdakka: Take in pure bike list. Nowhere else.
Ghazzy: Sometimes useful but mostly in battlewagon only list but thats no KoS anymore.
Other units: Warbikerz: PK and bosspole nob everywhere. They work in squads of 3-6 or as large squad of 12. Large squad is regular squad suited for combat and has great ranged weapons too. Its however expensive. Small unit is used as tank hunter squad or can hunt enemy support units like tau pathfinders or space marine devastators. I use small units.
Trukkboyz: PK and bosspole nob everywhere. Be sure to get cover or you are blown. Sometimes thats good with ramshackle. This is like default ork unit IMO. I use them.
Battlewagon boyz: Take units of 19 with character or units of 20. PK nob with bosspole everywhere. Nice unit but if your enemies retreat a bit you may have problem assaulting in turn 2. I use them.
Ard boyz with transport: I run them but many people dislikes them. I think they are worth the points because the save makes then really tough. Both transports suits them. I use them.
Buggies: Weaker variant of deffkoptaz. They are cheaper but can be killed more easily with bolters. They also arent scout and cannot do CC. I dont use them.
Deffkoptaz: Absolutely hillarious IMO!!! They are cheap, have scout, can lock shooty unit in first turn as well as destroy key vehicle very early. They are best used scouting and assaulting/killing key vehicle in turn one if you begin or outflank. They best work as single koptaz with rokkitz and sometimes buzzsaws. They can be used as squads of two but thats only if you really like them. I use them.
Nobz: Foot variant of biker ones. Go as small units of about 5 in trukk or take larger squad in wagon. Same rules of use as nob bikers. Always have a painboy. Very expensive. I use them.
Nob bikers: Very expensive. Useful only when there is almost whole list of them. Their points cost is deadly so they are choice if you want your list to be cheap in terms of money. Have problems with tyranid monstrous creatures and TH/ SS termies. Otherwise one of best combat units in game. I dont use them.
Burnas: If you put large unit into battlwagon along with KFF mek they can be real pain in the neck. Very good but also expensive unit. Will be target priority. I dont use them (yet ).
Stormboyz: IMO not worth the points because they will get shot up too quickly as they cannot use area terrain withou dangerous terrain rolls. Zagstruk makes them too unreliable. I dont use them.
Cheers.
