When I go down to my far-off store, I still see a tonne of SM players using scouts as cannon fodder.
This really upsets me.
Despite my signature, and despite their lower statistics, Scouts are some of the most versatile units in the game.
For example, a SM Tactica can have a basic mid-range attack at best. (12"-24" + Heavy weapon).
An entire scout squad can have a maximum range of 36"-48".
And when armed with Hbolters, they take down infantry all the easier.
Scout space marines have this incessant ability to shoot on a 4+, which, even for a SM is pretty good.
Armed with a sniper, they become the driving force to hold those orks down for the precious moment while a better squad has a chance to run away.
So, next time your taking out your scouts, don't think -sigh,- maw kannon fodduh faw da orkz.

I recently had a couple of games where I outflanked with the tiny unit of sniper scouts that I took to make up points. I was surprised at how my opponents--experienced, veteran players--weirdly seemed to forget about the scouts and left valuable, stationary armored vehicles up against the short board edges where the scouts were able to run on and krak them to death.
I mean, you can't base a tactic on the need for your opponent to make a mistake, but I'm surprised how well the scouts did.

This really upsets me. SM players use scouts as cannon fodder because they do not have grots.
The tabletop game of 40k is about controlling objectives or getting kill points. It is not about preserving your troops. If using scouts as cannon fodder wins the game, then its a great idea.
Tabletop 40k does not always match the fluff of the game, but hey nothing is perfect eh?

Scouts are awesome.
I know a guy who, for his Planetstrike games, fields 10 scouts (snipers, camo-cloaks, Telion)
and sticks them in a huge double bastion thats smothered in heavy bolters, and with a twin-linked
lascannon on the roof.
They are his big anchor unit; they can kill basically anything, they can destroy Termies, pin hordes, and
use Telion to pop tanks with the lascannon.
They are awesome, the only downside is that it's only one unit; hence, it can deal with anything, but it
can't deal with everything.

I think you meant to say " It can deal with anything but cant handle everything"
My brother uses scouts to varying degrees of success. Usually they dont do too well against my Orks (tho sometimes I take it badly with bad rolls) But I see him use them rather well against other MEQs and such.
Also he uses scouts and their storm landspeeders to basically kick your ass in an objectives game or the like. They are just there so bloody fast there isnt anything you can do about it
But I agree, against my Orks, he uses 1 of 2 ways. Either as a road bump, or to sit in terrain and just harass me to no end. Because I rarely assault something in terrain

Even the distraction factor is more than worth it (ie better to take a unit of scouts than, say, a third tac squad in 1750). Both objective-camping and outflanking, they pull your opponent's mind away from their own mobility game.
One thing I'm not so sure about is the usefulness of the Storm. What sort of SM force does it complement well?

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Sniper scouts are only really useful for high T monstrous creatures. Outflanking CC scouts can be OK if you give sarge a fist or meltabombs, but GW really nerfed scouts. They should be WS/BS 4, S/T 3, not the other way around.

2+ cover is cool... but yea.
Combat is not health.
Fast moving hvy flamers are plentiful...
And GW is moving towards including more 'other' kinds of weapons that ignore cover.
IMO get the MoTF for the extra dreads, before using it to buff scouts.

-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |

I have never played with scouts in the new Codex, but I bought a box because I can't tell you how many games I've played that I sincerely wished I'd had some outflanking CC scouts in reserve.
I plan to be fielding at least 20 scouts at 1750 points in the very near future.

I think a sniper squad is a cool way to fill points, add a scoring unit and provide something not normally seen in a marine army- long range anti-MC. I would never base an army around them and I wouldn't get more than one squad.
A good way to spend 100-150 points after you've bought everything else.
Oh, and Lysnader has bolster defenses too...

You can do a sarge with melta bombs or a powerfist for alpha strikes against enemy armor if you're going first, or outflank if you're going second. The way a friend of mine does it is he buys a 10 man scout squad, gives 5 snipers, then gives the other 5 bp/ CC and a melta bomb sarge (I think sometimes a combi-melta?). Although the scouts and storm are likely to die on your opponents first turn the disruption to his plans can be invaluable, as they will almost always auto-hit an important target.
