perhaps it's just the nature of that particular store? In my experience, it is impossible to find players willing to play a ''battle box'' game & you may have better luck if you can get enough models together to play whatever the MkII rule equivalent of what was once a 500 point or [ideally] 750 point game.

also, maybe try to find another local store with a larger player base, or people who are at least social enough to play a game with you while they wait for their friends. Ask if they will let you borrow/proxy models if they want to play a larger-scale game, or ask the FLGS owner to play in between customers?

to me, it seems the problem has less to do with WM & more to do with the local playerbase? anyone play Hordes? hit them up for a game...

best of luck to you.

Well another thing for me to ask here is. How old are you, because alot of players in general choose not to play with anyone under 17. I'll admit I'm one who refuses to play games with minors, and will find ways to "let them off easy" as to not hurt their feelings.

Radical bob both games at my flgs. Horde and Marmachine have a huge player base. Also its only store with in 200 miles of me. To red_lives im 18+ thats all i can say on my age subject. Maybe its because im only one that actualy bought khador models. . But still its very odd though.

One of the clubs I go to has a keen core WM playerbase.

We had a 'starter set' comp last month and my Cygnar army was consistently trounced by menoth in the 5 games I played. The Cygnar set is slightly outclassed.

It's on the backburner until I can get my gunners up. Long Gunners, mage gunners, 'Caster Caine and at least one of the new plastic Cygnar heavy boxes. (I can afford to run one game at a time, and at the moment, my focus is on Infinity.)

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

It sounds more like an issue of your warmachine friends flaking out on you than the system itself being problematic that way. I defy anyone to tell me they don't know a single inpleasant warhammer player. I know I can't

I know of a couple ''unpleasant'' WH players, but regardless of the endeavor the nature of humanity demands there will be asshats...

However, and please bear in mind this is my own personal opinion based on my experience, the philosophy of Warhammer's ''Most Important Rule'' is much more friendly than the Privateer Press ''Page 5'' mentality which seems to plague a good portion of their fanbase.

Listen, I love Warmachine & Hordes. It is fast-paced & there is something to be said about the tension of knowing that the game is on the line with every move made or dice rolled. They have definitely taken some good parts from many different genres of gaming & mashed them into a smashing good time [no pun intended].

To the OP, don't give up! The game is rad & you will enjoy it I have no doubt...maybe be a bit more persistent without being a jerk & you will have many a fun showdown...it may take time, but most things that are worth it do!

@OP: It is *extremely* lame that they "recruit" you to play WM and then don't play. I'm sorry that your "friends" treat you this way.

Maybe you need to play more... aggressively? Forcefully? Like you... Dang it, there's this term, it's right on the tip of my tongue. I can't think of what it is though...

in this circumstance, I believe the phrase you are looking for is ''...like you've got a pair.'' whatever that means

Showering and the use of deodorant can also be an issue sometimes.

Not saying it applies in this case, but just try to rule out all possible reasons

Have you actually asked them why they do not want to play with you? They are the only ones who can provide you with this answer while nobody here can.

I have to admit that I'm shocked it took THIS long for someone, amongst all of these experienced gamers, to finally ask this.

If nobody wants to plan a game with you, approach them respectfully and humbly and ask them why not.
You: "Can I ask you a question?"
Them: "Sure."
You: "Why don't you want to play against me? You don't have a game going on, and you're just waiting for someone else to show up. It would be a good way to pass the time. Plus, as a new player, I could really use the practice. If your friend shows up in mid-game, we can quit on the spot and call it over. I'm just really looking to get some experience."

Regardless of their response, thank them for their time & for hearing you out. Eventually, someone will cave in and (a) play you or (b) tell you why they won't.

could the word be proactive?

and on topic, I think its sad how much you can invest yourself (not just money-wise) in a hobby such as this, but not be able to find people to play with. For similar reasons, I've succumbed twice to playing a kid who I think will grow up to be TFG (he's on his way) because noone else was available to play with. People aren't obligated to play you, so it creates a sort of problem of people sometimes getting left out. A lack of FLGS's or lack of frequenters at them probably contribute to the choice in people, too.

No. It's "like you've got a pair."
It's a Warmachine reference.

Asking people why they don't want to play with you is the best way to find out if WM is a good game for you in the long run.

In my experience, there are a few reasons for them not to play you, chief among them are:

1. They are uncomfortable playing against someone they don't know.

I have this experience now with 40k. I hardly knew the players at the local gaming club (as opposed to my lgs), and without a friendly middle-man to introduce you (luckily I had a few friends to get me started), it'll be tough to get a game in.

Solution: Find a friend to act as an introducer for you. The store owner is a good start. Else, start getting friendly with the crowd yourself

2. They are uncomfortable playing at a certain point level

This shouldn't be an issue with WM unless they are just being jerks. But with 40k, in the beginning I couldn't find anyone who was willing to play at 1k points, since most of them have tweaked their lists for 1750 and above (which in some cases, means at least a week of planning)

Solution: Plan ahead for a game. Next time you are at your lgs, ask someone if they are willing to play you at a certain point level the next day or week

3. They are uncomfortable playing against new players

This could be because they can't be bothered explaining the rules, or because they don't want to ruin a game for a new player, or somewhere in between. Whatever the case, more experienced players have a tendency to choose their opponents (which again, shouldn't be an issue with WM!) for ease of play

Solution: Find a person willing to play small games, a fellow newbie, or rope in a friend to join in. My lgs owner makes it a point to introduce new players to the crowd, and always manages to 'persuade' a vet to get a game in, so this isn't much of an issue where I am

4. They are sometimes jerks

I noticed some players don't want to play you just because. They are a rare breed, mind, and it doesn't do justice to the player demographic in general. It could also be that the lgs is not a flgs.

Solution: I would suggest moving to greener pastures if there were some within 200miles of where you live. Otherwise, stay until the mood changes. I've seen that happen more often than not. There's bound to be a friendly face that crops up, and when it does, latch on.

At this point its less "warmachine" than it is "gaming store" and "people".

But ultimately its down to you, if you find it unfeasible to enjoy a game, whether its because of the rules or the crowd, then selling the figures may not be a bad idea.

Its been a million years since I played 40k, but I still have my orks because its a hobby and I like painting, though.

Daedalusaf has it right though.

They don't want to play you because you are an outsider. Outsider is a detriment in a game like Warmachine.

Daedalusaf has it right on the money.
Its not about the game, its you. Get in there talk about the game, ask loads of questions, and figure out your place in the general pecking order of the gamestore and get in where you fit in. As for the Newb factor, it is WORSE with games like warmachine then it is with other games because of the general Metagame.
Had you a load more models then just the basic box, knew how to use them, and just jumped into a game with them, then it would have probibly been another story.
You walk in, don't say much, and show up with a smaller then normal force of guys people REALLY don't like to play against. HEH.
It isn't something you can't get in there about though.
You got several different options that have been given, but Being quite and to yourself is not one of them. You go there and talk about the woodsman, the jack choices being average to savage, or whatever.
You need to open up the floor, then get in and start up a discussion about the Iron Kingdoms, or the next choices you should get in your army.
ON that account, you need to get into that too. Find out about the game and discuss, strike up conversations about the armies and get into conversations about your game.
YOU picked Warmachine, now get in where you fit in and play like you....

Got a pair of jacks and some infantry, then a couple of merc units. If not, then look for a couple of stores with other crowds, because you might have your standard issue elietist D bags with thier too cool for you pants on.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I think this is one of the pertinent factors here. Warmachine is not by any means a newbie-friendly game. I'd go so far as to say it's newbie-hostile.

The supply does not get to make the demands.
