When should I use them, before or after painting? Plus can someone tell what are the differences between Matt Varnish, Satin Varnish and Gloss Varnish? Which one will give the best effects? Any advice would be helpfull thanks.

Matt = 100% no shine , good when your high light doesnt follow light source
Satin = Have some shine , thus producing minor artificial high light under a light source.
Gloss = Imagine what waxed floor looks like.
Gloss is usually the strongest at protection .

I use gw 'ardcoat on space marine armor, where the armor plates cover. because its a brush on coat, I can leave the area between the plates uncoated, so it makes the armor pop more.

Use gloss coat first, this will protect your figs from damage over the long term.
Then coat it with a Matt finish to knock the shine off and give your figs a more real look.
Over time the matt coat may rub off some well handeled minis, just shoot another coat f matt and your good. ( this very rarely has happend will me but has once or twice.)
Several thin coats rather than heavy one coats.
Been doing this for about 10 years and the figs still look like the day I painted them.

Yeah, I love that little undefinable "something extra" it gives to the look of the model.
Should know that it does take the shiny away from "metallic" paints a bit. Still looks fine if it's something you just use for details, but I'd go for something else if you use them heavily.
