Ok, so here is the fiction I came up with for a SM chapter. I don't actually plan to make an army using this lore, but I just wanted to put it up to see what people thought about it. (warning, gets a bit long)

The Angels of Fear

During the closing centuries of M38, the High Lords of Terra came to the decision, after over a two thousand years of debate, that in these dire times it would be acceptable to create a new chapter of Space Marines using the small quantities of gene-seed from one of the the Traitor Legions that had been held in the Imperium's vaults ever since the Horus Heresy. The High Lords spent over a decade going over the records of each of the Legions to decide which gene-seed would be used. The Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus were excluded almost immediately, since creating new Space Marines with the genes of the Arch-Traitor himself would be impossibly foolish. Most of the other Legions were also removed from consideration, because their flaws would lead them down the path of heresy as surely as it had lead the parent Legions. Finally, it came down to the gene-seed of the Death Guard and the Night Lords. These two Legions were judged to possess the best traits out of all the traitors, and that these traits would make them suitable for this project. The Death Guard's ideals of stoicism and the relentless push to victory made them seem ideal candidates, but as the Imperium faced ever greater threats from heresy and treachery, the High Lords began to consider the value of the Night Lord's brutal and merciless tactics harnessed in the service of the Emperor once more. This opinion was shared by more and more of the Lords as the reality of the dawning millennium became more clear. Finally, after over one hundred years of painstaking consideration, the High Lords of Terra initialized the founding of the Angels of Fear chapter of Space Marines, using the Night Lords gene-seed. Officially, there is no record of their founding chapter. The current rumor amongst their fellow Space Marines is that they are descended from either the Dark Angels or Blood Angels chapter, both of which would explain their name and their vicious, but consistently successful, battle doctrine.

However, the High Lords of Terra were hardly willing to allow this untested tool loose upon the galaxy without fully determining that it would serve without fail. Foremost among their concerns was that if the Angels ever encountered their treacherous brothers, the Night Lords, they would either join them in the service of Chaos, or at very least refuse to fight them and be massacred. Accordingly, after the creation of the first 100 Angels of Fear, the fledgling chapter was dispatched to a remote Imperial colony that had recently fallen under attack from the Night Lords. They were not sent alone, however. A company of Grey Knights was dispatched at their side, fully briefed on exactly what the Angels of Fear were and what might happen on the planet. If any of them showed even the slightest hesitation in engaging the Night Lords, the Grey Knights were ordered to wipe out the entire chapter, to ensure that the damage was controlled.

The orders were completely unnecessary. Even the Grey Knights were shocked by the ferocity of the Angels of Fear as they attacked the Night Lords, taking their kinsman completely unawares and crushing their defenses with uncanny precision, as if they instinctively knew exactly what their weaknesses were. This was, of course, true, since the Night Lords' weaknesses were their own. After the Night Lords had been routed and the Space Marines held the field, the leader of the Grey Knights, Brother-Captain Grelton, decided to determine for himself the trustworthiness of these terrible warriors. He approached the new Chapter Master of the Angels of Fear, Fearmaster O'Rau, and asked him, "Why do you attack them so, these who are your true brothers? You could share in your bonds with them, but instead you tear them apart in your anger. What loyalty do you have beyond that towards your kin?"

The Fearmaster returned Grelton's penetrating stare evenly, and responded, "We and the Night Lords are brothers, but this is why we hate them. They were once the wrath of the Emperor, terrifying in its destructive power, horrific in its merciless justice, and unstoppable in its endless war against the foes of the Imperium the Emperor built for mankind. Now, they have thrown off their righteous mantle, and dare to wield the Emperor's power as if it were their own. This is our purpose. We pick up their mantle, to use whatever means are necessary to defend humanity in its darkest hour, and to annihilate the cowards who could not bear the mantle themselves. The Emperor stands with us and now that his wrath is his own again, never again will man turn from him lightly, for they shall pause as they do so, and shiver in the thought of the Angels of Fear. For we are Astartes, but we know fear. We know that fear is power, and that we alone shall hold this power. Never shall fear master us, for we master it." At these words, which the veteran Captain knew were true, Grelton bowed to the Fearmaster, and said, "Welcome back, brother."

This speech became the Angel's creed, their declaration against a universe that threatened to devour them, and the terrible threat of corruption that hung over their heads. Based out of the planet of Cravak Prime, a death world of rocky wasteland, broken only by a massive hive city, built up around a mining site containing the planet's only resource, adamantium. Order in the hive is maintained by threat of retribution from the Angels of Fear and after the Great Decimation, in which one of every ten citizens was killed by the chapter in reprisal for an attempted rebellion, the hive is considered a model of stability for the rest of the Imperium. From here, the Angels of Fear strike at any who dare to defy the Emperor. Fear is their armour, and holy wrath is their weapon.

Agreed, awesome speech. Plus, I love the concept of a chapter made from "purified" traitor geneseed.

thanks, kind of ironic that the CSM codex gave me the inspiration for my chapter, since it mentioned that the Imperium still had some of the gene-seed from the traitor legions. now that i actually have more of the chapter lore written out, i really want to build an army for it, but money is a bit tight atm and im already working on a 1k sons army.
