Hello im a space marine player with a half drop pod, marine army, going agianst a eldar player with a giant wall of pain.
We are playing 1000pts
my list:
HQ- Librarian - Terminator Armor w Stormshield | GOI/Avenger

5 Assault termies, 4 th/ss 1 LC (All Deepstriking)

10 Tac Marines - Meltagun/ML/Pod w Loc beacon

10 Scouts
5 snipers
5 shotguns in a LandspeederStorm w HF

Ironclad Dred w meltagun/HF/Pod

Predator- Autocannon (cheat armor)

Now im having trouble, bc of our table setup (we have to many IMHO area terrians ie trees/forest) so i cant shoot thru the terrian most of the time (only shoot 2in in and out but not through) and the 5th ed cover saves the wraithlords wreck me almost everytime, heres an idea of his list (not 100%) so any advice would be amazing =]

Avatar

Seer council 1 farseer w mind war
3 warlocks (all so he can skip wraithsight i believe)

two 5 man dire avenger squads
both with exarchs (one shooty and 1 w dire sword)

6 banchees w exarch

3 Wraithlords
2 w brightlance/sword
1 w ML/sword

SO MUCH MS goodness lol
btw i love eldar and wraithlords ect... just need some tactics help

wraithlords are terrible units.. so freaking easy to kill. your hammer terminators should make short work of them. also, rapid firing sternguard will kick the crap out of them. a full squad of sternguard rapid firing the wound on 2+ shots will almost always kill a wraithlord, even if you roll below average.

scout snipers may get 1 wound per turn on them... not great.

Sterngard are good (liked to pod them w libby), but for the points snipers have treated me better 140pts for all 10 scouts ( 4+ cover safe 3+ if GTG) infiltraiting they like to absord alotbit of fire, it was fun GOI them around tho, just never worked as planned

You do realise this is not playing by the rules? It's TLOS now, so if a unit can see part of a Wraithlord, it can shoot it. In order for it to claim a cover save, it needs to be obscured from vision by more than 50%. It's quite hard to get a coversave on a Wraithlord.

Wraithlords are great units Only if you take several of them though.

And yes, they can be killed by a full squad of sternguard if they drop pod close to them, but guess what? Most of the time I've dropped my sternguard like that they end up dying in the next shooting phase. Also the wraithlords are ~100-150p each, a lot cheaper than a squad with sternguard, at least if they have backup by an librarian.

Also if you fortune the avatar and run him towards the enemy, they'll have a hard time ignoring him, and even if they spend 1500p worth of shooty units just shooting at him for one turn, he'll probably end up living to see the next turn.

But yeah, wraithlords aren't unstoppable. Anti-tank weapons work wonders on them, as they are often Ap3 or better and hi-str. As the previous poster said, you have a hard time getting cover saves, which means if it hits and wounds, you take a wound.

IMO mass volume of fire isn't effective enough versus wraithlords, due to their hi toughness and 3+ save, but anti-tank weapons will make short work of them. You can make do with poisoned weapons, but the 3+ save is going to save a lot of wounds before dying.

Oh and the eldar player should have some close combat units backing them up, because if they get hit by close combat specialists they might be in some trouble. So if he doesn't have them backed up with anything, just assault them with power fists and hammers.

I know i sound really noob and i dont have the rulebook handy, is there somewhere in there that disallows shooting thro a "area terrain" suck as "trees" or "forests", and units inside the area can only shoot out 2 inches and other units cannot shoot a target thats more than 2 inches into the area terrian (forest)

ie. avatar is 3 inches into a forest so my scouts are useless b/c or the 2" rule.

Not saying im right at all, its just after reading the area terrian rule it sounds like thats how it works...

thats an old rule. now, if you see any part of a unit / model, you can shoot at it, even if its through a huge freaking forest and you can only see 1MM of it.
