I have seen firsthand what can happen if you speak P&R, I really don't think P&R Shoukld be discussed, It can lead to hard feelings

I believe the correct policy would be avoiding P&R discussion threads, thus avoiding hard feelings.

Politics and religion is ok because its a real life topic.

The answer is not to limit the topics which will really remove a lot of depth from the quality of Dakka.

Really if you see a discussion on politics relgion or a subject close to your opinions you must show the maturity to either:

1. Ignore the thread

2. Post politely.

Remember that noone is entirely correct in the opinions, and others might not see them. Learn ths and you can argue a point with someone with a diametrically opposed point of view without anger. Dakkas quality really jumps when such debates ensue as it proves that you can hold such discussions on the internet.

Ther best way to ensure quality on Dakka is to allow adult discussions, 'adult' as in real life topics for grown ups not pr0n. Sure some people come along with the opinion what you cannot have such a discussion without reference to Godwins or another internet meme, and that 'all' relgion topics end in anger. This becomes a self fulfilling prophesy amongst the socially immature. See relgion lets cue some trolling. Why? Why not just have an opinion and have it out head to head with people who think differently to you. Even while such discussns never work to convert the other poster, they can teach third parties, build bridges and more importantly deal with misconceptions of people who beleive in the same god, lack of god or political system that you do.

All this ends if Dakka comes to the incorrect conclusion of religons + politics = trolling. All that does is close minds and make the boards shallow. In effect what you get means current Dakka > mental age of closed topic Dakka. There are enough gamers forums for the unthinking.


My only real issue over political threads is that the worst trolls on the forum are often the mods. I got a trolling from hell, worst I have ever been subjected to because I posted comments about politics/religion, even though I always approach such topics politely. The trolling continued until I posted proof that he didnt know what he was talking about. To his credit my assailant backed down after that and even apologised and admittedly was not a mod at the time.

However Yakface does choose some mods who have not only avid pioltical and relgious feelings, but are openly hostile to those of opposed points of view. I find that a little odd. Perhaps they are good mods for News and rumours, but Dakka needs Mods with amturity to police Off Topic. this doesnt mean tghat they cannot have very strong opinions, but it does mean they should only argue them topically
