yes it is...

best army for low cost would be a jack heavy army. All have options for this, but best is probably Khador.

However if money is an issue then I can tell you that starting an army is not expensive. It is expanding one...

for a halfway descent army with a few jacks and a few solo's and infantry you will pay anything from 100 to 200. Then comes the variations of the army

WM is like GW but with fewer minis. If you buy a small GW army, you pay as much as WM.

Sure, WM plays more like a combo-card game, but it's a fun diversion.

WM has the Mk.2 rules & stats online for free download, so you could just play with bases to start.

I've always found the 'cheaper' argument to be a bit facetious. A starter box is cheaper but if try to put a full army together it stills costs quite a bit. It is cheaper, but in the sense that the GW army will be $400 and the Warmachine one will be $325. It is cheaper, but not excessively.

With the price of minis these days, Price is not a comparison of the games, anymore.

I picked up my first box set when Warmachie first came out, painted up a few, and put them away for a rainy day. Lately it poured, I pulled them out, went to buy more and found that the price per box is running up form the origianal price of around 30 bucks to about 49-52.

Plastic Blister packs? About 10-20 when I was picking them up in the beginning for about 8-13.

All games are cost creeping, so its just something to have to suck up if you want to play.

I suggest getting a jack, an order of infantry, and a caster to start out with and learn the game, THEN go back and pick up the investment of the later gear.

If you pick one, you'll be ok. It will give you a chance to learn to put together, paint, and play the game without getting you stuck in only later to find that you don't like it.

Warmachine is not a "Normal" game, per say. New guys are not taken in with open arms, so to speak. IF you get in, you are going to have to prove yourself, almost getting jumped in on the table.
Don't be afraid to throw your smaller jacks and infantry at the enemy caster if you have to.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

It is a solid game(Mark II will return the game back to Warmachine, instead of Warinfantry) , but the cost is the sames as a 1,000 - 1,500 point 40k army.

Cheers

im on a warmachine kick at the moment.

i really dig the game. it is more competative then 40k, but its a nice change as well. painting different models is always nice, and the range really has alot of flavor. the game is fast paced and immersive without being bogged down with excessive rules. if your honestly looking at the game, check out the MK 2 rules, they are free. get some bases from your LGS or cut some of your own, and proxy it up.

warmachine isnt cheaper then 40k, its a myth. if you want to keep it small, sure its cheap, but if the game grows on you your gonna be plunging a few hundred into the game. i have 2 forces over 100 points now, and a third mercenary force is quickly keeping up.

i would recommend looking at the models you like first then the rules second. to me, liking the models is key. i play Khador and Trollbloods in Hordes. Im also painting up a Hefty amount of Mercenaries to both augment my Khaodr and run on their own under the4 4 star commission.

try it out. i bashed warmachine for a long time before trying it, and once i did i got hooked.
