Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hey folks!

I've never been to a GT before, and reeeeeeeallly want to. I've spent the last 30 minutes browsing through the Adepticon 2010 calendar, and was talking to my wife about it (we'd have to start making plans now if we were going to try traveling to it), but the events available didn't seem to support a weekend of gaming for me, so I thought I'd make a post that was thinking out loud.

On the Friday of Adepticon, 40k event is a Gladiator-style bash; 2,250 points with apocalypse units allowed. I've played in a couple of apocalypse games, but I have no apocalypse units (No skullcrusha fortresses, no stompas). Seems like this is kind of out for me....I need to play more apocalypse, learn more about it, get a stompa or two...or I could bring out the Tau and giggle my way through 1,500 points of Broadside battlesuits with friends? Probably better served if I passed on this until another year.

On the Saturday of Adepticon, the 40k event is the team championships: Events needing a four person team. I haven't got one, so...guess I'm out there.

On the Sunday of Adepticon, there are two main 40k events; a youngblood tournament that I'm much too old to compete in, and the 40k Championships, which is a standard 1850 tournament. The details page is broken, so I couldn't read more about it, but an 1850 tournament is right up my alley.

Then again, I guess I'm talking about a day's worth of gaming (and on a Sunday!) in a far away place requiring significant driving to...$30 for a weekend pass in order to access a tournament that costs another $30. Comparing $60 of entry fees against a 15 hour drive each way(which means I probably need to fly), two nights in a hotel....well, I don't know what to think. I'd LOVE to go to a GT, but I wonder if Adepticon is the wrong choice of an event to attend given my remote location and ability to really participate in various events.

Anyway, just rambling....thoughts?

Hit up your FLGS and make some friends (that's meant to be read in a non-pejorative sense).

A friend started talking about Adepticon on Facebook a week or two ago, and we have 6 people confirmed with 4 more maybes. 4 of us have already booked hotel rooms, etc... and we're working on assembling a team this Sunday. We'll be driving up from Columbia (about 13 hours).

Are you coming from ATL? It seems like they have an active gaming community (two stores participated in 'ard Boyz, IIRC)-- seems like you could drum up a team (and some people to split gas costs with!).

Alternatively, if you're a gambling man, you might start a thread on here or elsewhere to assemble a team that meets in Chicago. CafePress some t-shirts, coordinate army lists, and hope they're passably competent generals.

This will be my first year attending, too-- furiously painting away and working on a team theme.

Well I am in the same boat and here is why I decided to make the plunge and go to Adepticon. The first is I have some good buddies that I am going with and I know that no matter what happens we will have fun. Even if every game sucked we would still have a good time.

Secondly, there is not a person that I have talked too that has said it is horrible and they will never go again. My friends tell me that its not going to Adepticon, its expiriencing Adepticon. I too am playing in the Gladiator and I will probably not have a SuperHeavy unless I can build a Termis Ultra by then.

Even if you know absolutely no one there what better way to hang out an play with people from all over the world. I am stoked to say the least about that weekend. I want to have fun, I want to play and I want to travel. All wrapped up in one trip.

BnB all the way!!!

When in doubt.........Duck!

Even in the far future there can still be heroes...

Lost in the warp. Halp!

I would LOVE to go to Adepticon, except that I'm still recovering from having to move on zero notice.

Mind you, I am HORRIBLE at playing 40k so I'd probably not play very many games if any at all. The seminars and such seem like an awesome thing though, and I just like conventions in general.

I know our group is hoping to get in pick-up games as often as possible-- we're debating packing a table (battle board) with us to use in the hotel room if there's not open gaming space available [Side Note: does anyone know if there's open gaming tables available?].

I say go for it. You don't need superheavies for the Gladiator (even though the ability to grab a $90 stompa is always an option) and if you don't have a team, then Saturday you can go check out the rest of the con, take the wife shopping, or watch porn in your hotel room. Sunday would be your main event and if you really want to find out where you stack up, the Championships is where it's at.

I know I would be going to Adepticon this year if it wasn't the exact weekend I'm moving.... BOOOOO.

You should definitely go. The prize support is great and your mech. orks are auto-win, right?

Not Atlanta...I've recently moved to a small town in eastern North Carolina, where 40k gaming requires an hour drive somewhere to a FLGS. =p Without easy access to a store, my gaming is falling off. :(

You don't need apoc units to play in the gladiator. The two years that I finished in the top ten, I ran straight codex lists. Last year, I brought an apoc. toy (An'ggarath) and didn't do nearly as well. With Reaver titans being banned, and flyer shenanigans being limited this year, I don't think you're missing anything by not having a FW list/item.

Well, not if you find a team. As it gets closer, you'll see people looking to recruit replacement team members, as some people inevitably cannot show. If you get there and want to play in the TT, there will be other pick-up teams formed the day of the event (there always are). Or, you can try and organize something online now, which has worked for many people in the past. Three months is easily enough time to paint a 1k army, so if you get on this, it's not impossible.

It's an 1850 tournament, yup.

Okay, so, you could play all three days if you wanted. There are also pick-up games, if you can't find your way to play in the big events. There's a combat patrol tournament on Friday, for those who don't want to play in the gladiator too. There are also a ton of hobby seminars, which are well worth the time, I've learned something at every one I've attended. If you want three days of gaming, you can get three days of gaming. If you want two days of gaming and some hobby stuff, you can get that too. There's really a lot to do outside of the tournaments.

I've been to Adepticon 4 times. I didn't actually play last year, but I still had a good time.

There are other things to do. There's usually sculpting and painting classes, GW has sent PR and MVP folks to discuss things (although you won't get anything not on the net in these things), and you can meet some nice folks.

The amount of gaming stuff can be almost overwhelming, but in a good way.

The location last year had a Target, a movie theater, and a mall within walking distance. The hotel had a sauna which I took advantage of.

Whether this is enough for you, I don't know. I did have a friend participate in the gladiator at the last moment and he enjoyed it without bringing his gargant or baneblades. The Gladiator IIRC wasn't using Apocalypse rules last year, so it may change, but for us the timing was the biggest downer. You pretty much had to arrive Thursday afternoon in order to be ready for it.

Adepticon is absolutely an amazing time. It's really great across the board. Granted, it's certainly more 40k heavy than fantasy, but the fantasy side was still cool. Overall though, great experience.

I would echo the other sentiments of potentially finding a fun group for the team tournament, as it's an incredible experience. Very cool, a lot of fun, you see some crazy stuff. Our entire team each got 4 books from our 4th round opponent. You never know.

Just make sure you avoid any run-ins with Kookabura Wings from the Outback.

I saw the combat patrol....I'm not sure a 400 point game is really attractive to me.

And kookabura wings; I've had mixed results with those. They've been my favorite food from the Outback for a long time, but I've had a couple of bad experiences with them now - one of the worst was the night before 'Ard Boyz semi-finals; my wife and I went out to the Outback, and she didn't think the chicken was cooked well enough, but I ate them all anyway, and spent the rest of the night crawling into and out of the bathroom.

Didn't Bill Kim (Centurion99) win the Gladiator twice with essentially codex lists?

I'd still rather play Fantasy that day (and I will) but given your postings here Dash I'd say Gladiator is right up your alley.

Ah, then I suspect that you were posting flamebait then and I just missed it. I didn't realize that I told anyone about the Outback experience and I thought you were posting something incredibly coincidental to an experience I had. In which case I feel foolish for responding now. =p

You don't have to invest in Forgeworld to play in the Gladiator but the lack thereof could crimp your chances of winning. It's not too late to put a team together. I think the championship RTT on Sunday is the best 40k event right after the team tourney. The gladiator can get kind of crazy with all these units you've never seen before but it just adds to the excitement.

I understand Adepticon's policy re: FW models needing to be the actual FW models for most of the units (converted.counts-as stuff can be a bit confusing at times). But If you were running a Damocles Rhino, or something similar that is an easy/non-complex conversion (see also tarantula/artillery emplacements), are they super-strict? We were kicking around running Imperial Searchlight Teams in a couple of our lists (20 point scoring unit? Done!) but were going to convert our own (I mean, really... it's two Cadians with a Searchlight... what if we're running Death Korps?)

You can easily play in the Gladiator without any Apocalypse units or Forge World models. People do it all the time.

The AdeptiCon 40K Championship rules can be found here.

40K Combat Patrol is happening both Friday and Saturday as an alternative to the larger 40K events.

There are also a whole host of Warmachine, Flames of War and Specialist Games (like Warhammer Quest!!!!) events all three days - not to mention the seminars are fantastic. Most of the Specialist Games events and all the demos are free.

The $30 Weekend Badge fee gets you a massive swag bag containing books from Black Library, 2 unique minis produced exclusively for AdeptiCon and a whole host of fine products from all the sponsors. More info on all this will be posted on www.adepticon.org in the near future.

@kartofelkopf: The AdeptiCon Model Policy has also changed for 2010. It can be found here.

If you love wargaming, the hobby aspects, gaming, comradery , shopping, free stuff or any combination of the above - I think you have have a brilliant time at the convention. The Westin is also a really, really, really nice venue...
