I posted in your army list thread, and I'll follow up here that my advice for using them to maximum effect is to take them off the table, put them back in their carrying case, go back to your computer and rethink your army list.

Friends don't let friends run horde armies at timed tournaments.

In all seriousness, get movement trays, have counted dice, have squad markings to tell them apart easy, and anything else you can do to crank through turns as quickly as you can. No one likes to play a tournament game and have it only get through 3 turns.

A couple of points actualy, and one question.
1. I'm assuming that you are going to stick with your list so there is no point in trying to tweak it now.
2. I'm also assuming that since you mentioned it being a friendly game that your list doesn't need to be dynamite.
3. As for tactics, your playing a hoard ork army, act like a hoard, run at the enemy and try and envelope them with as many crazy green fungi as you can.
4. This is the question, how long does a timed tournament game last?

Depends on the Tournament. Most of the ones I've been to are around 2 hours (1850-2000 points), with maybe a few minutes to find your table/opponent and get the scenario.

Its a 1250 point tournament, so I imagine that it will be a little shorter, but not much maybe an hour and 40 minutes???

my list doesn't need to be dynamite but I would like it to be slightly competitive

thanks for the advice so far

You'll want to read this article as well:

How to Play a Horde Quickly

Good luck, and have fun!

As for learning tactics, you can get some basics by talking to people on the internet, but the best way to learn is to play, play play! Things that work for someone else may not work for you, and you have to learn your playstyle and your army.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Lorek, that's a useful article.

I use two cookie sheets, or cookie trays for my army, and have been thinking about magnetized moving trays. I should be a little more industrious with my own casualty removals so that when the game is ended and I reassemble my army onto my moving trays, it takes less time.

Of course you want to be slightly competitive, thats why you play this game. I enjoy friendly games as well, and even though winning isnt my main goal, winning still makes ya feel good.

As far as your list, it looks pretty decent. I agree that when running a horde, you literally should be running the horde. So in that case, I personally wouldnt of taken shoota boyz, simply because of the need for running. You wont really be walking around shooting at the enemy. Sure occasionally you might pop some off, but still running is what you should be thinking about. The KFF was a pretty smart idea, to keep the casualties down.
Also dont forget to use cover to your advantage as always, seeing as everything, even a random spent bullet casing, seems to give a cover save, your horde will need those cover saves to get to the foightin. And if at all possible, Id say try to keep the army together when possible. That way your opponent has to many targets to fire at, and so they hit the front line as close to the same time as possible. That will not only hurt the enemy, but after the smoke clears, itll shake your opponent seeing so much of his stuff gone. And like Ive said a few times on dakka, your playing the person as well as the army. If you can take their morale away as well, then they will make mistakes that will gain you the advantage.
Good luck man!

Wow, that arcile really explains how to shave time on every corner. Right now I use a GW carrying case, each layer has 32 slots, I found this perfect for orks, with 4 groups of 30 boys all devided clearly, then the other side can be used for dethkoptas and other goodies. I have never beed a fan of movement trays, I can see their appeal, but I still want to be able to move fluidly. I dont' think you should have too much trouble moving that many models in that amount of time. The first turn is all running forward, so not too much finikity movement. Turn two and three assault phase will be the killer
