I originally posted this as a question in YMDC :
So, I want to put 3,500 points of IG on the table. My army has 3 platoons of 25 men, 4 squads of 10 vets and 3 heavy weapon squads each with 3 HW teams. (Around 130 models).
We are playing Apocalypse and I want first turn so want to bid a quicker deployment time than my opponent. (He is playing Orks with a green tide so is also fairly horde heavy). I practiced doing some different deployments and figured it would be a lot easier to move them around on bits of card.
So after I cut out some thick card movement trays it occurs to me that I can leave them on the card and actually deploy them on to the board that way.
This cuts my time to deploy to a fraction of what it is if I stand each model on its own. So what do you think? I am playing at home so it's not like a tournament but how would others feel if they had this done to them, OK or not OK?
As I got a general thumbs up I tried painting them, stippled green one side ads stippled grey the other. I made 4 basic sizes: 200 x 150 for my 20 man platoons, 130 x 100 for my 10 man vet squads, 120 x 110 for heavy weapon squads and 100 x 100 for command squads. I decided not to add edges or textures so in the end they are just thick card painted with acrylics, but for games of apocalypse on open terrain they should give me the edge I need to get first turn every game (until my opponent makes his own!).

It works but you're put in greater danger to ordnance and templates damage.

Looks good, a guy at my local GW has an all-infantry (thats right, no tanks) vahallan guard army, just masses (and I mean masses) of infantry, commisars, chenkov and a few ogryns. He uses the new LotR movement tray things to move his infantry around, cuts his movement phase down quite a bit lol

WHAT KIND OF GAURD PLAYER IS HE!!!!!!!!!moving his troops, pfff they should sit their and die like the plastic they are.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Fair point about vulnerable to blasts and templates, and no, they probably wont move much as it means they cant fire their heavy weapons. My point was originally just being quick onto the board.

I would suggest instead of using card, use galvanized sheet metal and magnetize the the bottoms of all your models. This way they stick and you don't have to be so careful when moving them. I would also think about making the trays smaller for the infantry. Make them just wide enough for 1 row of infantry and long enough for 5 troops abreast. You can then use some magnets to attach rows together if you want to move them in blocks. This would allow you to have much more flexibility in moving your troops and minimizing blast template damage.

I have actually considered doing something like this with the entirety of my boards. That way there is no way for anything to accidentally move from someone hitting the table with a leg as they move something.

I also second the thought that they would be pretty vulnerable to blast and other template weapons, but still, if you have a ton of infantry, not a bad idea.

Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

Valhallan!!! Sits there with chenkov and uses 'send in the next wave' a lot, to be fair the bases makes it easier to remove casualties (as chenkov has killed ~80 and rising of his own men, and only reached and killed the enemy twice)

Oh and his troops aren't plastic, they are all metal valhallan models from mail order
